An enlargement of the prostate gland is a common condition as men age. If you are diagnosed with Benign Prostate Hyperplasia or enlarged prostate condition in simple terms, then you have a variety of medications and treatments to choose from. Often the treatment is based on the severity of the problem.

Enlarged prostate can be treated in both surgical as well as non surgical ways depending on what you and your doctor decide is best for you. In the lower stages of the BPH condition, medical treatments are suggested, but in the more advanced and serious stages, surgery becomes necessary.

There are also many medications available for the treatment of BPH. Some of these include, Alpha Blockers, which were originally used to reduce the blood pressure in the body. However, when taken in the case of BPH, these drugs act by relaxing the muscles of the prostate and the urinary bladder and thus easing urine discharge, which is a condition of major concern in BPH. However these drugs do not help in reducing the size of the prostate gland. Hence the doctor recommends them at an early stage of the condition. Another medication is Alpha Reductase Inhibitors. These drugs act directly by restricting the male hormone production in the body, which are the root cause of the BPH condition. Thus, as the production of the male hormone is limited by this medication, the size of the prostate will also decreases gradually.

Apart from medications, BHP can also be treated by therapies. The most popular non-surgical BHP treatment is Cooled Thermo TherapyTM. This therapy is an FDA approved non surgical therapy for the treatment of BPH. In this therapy, a microwave laser is used to burn the cells of the prostate, while a cooling therapy cools the areas surroundings the prostate to put the patient at ease during the treatment. This is a permanent cure to the BPH condition, and is also safer than the other surgical options.

A surgical method, Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (short form TURP) is treatment for the removal of the enlarged prostate. It is very successful, but needs to be conducted under specially trained surgeons. The patient is required to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after the surgery, and they require the use of a catheter for 10 to 14 days after the surgery.

A less invasive surgery is laser surgery or Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (short for PVP). It is an effective and fast alternative to TURP. This is because unlike TURP, in the laser surgery, the prostate is removed with the help of a laser, which is safer and much faster, as the patient is discharged in just 1 day's time. Also, with the Photoselective Vaporization of the prostate therapy the cells of the prostate that are responsible for the growth of the gland are burnt so that there are no more complications in future.

Consider your treatment options carefully with your doctor. The best option for you depends on the severity of your problem. Fortunately, BPH is totally curable at any stage of its detection and you can once again live a normal life thereafter.
