Tooth bonding is a cosmetic dental service that is used to repair both the structure and the appearance of teeth. It is also the preferred method of replacing dental fillings that have grown old and fallen out. Its applications extend much further, however, than simple cavity repair.

Tooth bonding is done using a bio-friendly composite resin that is matched to the color of teeth so their condition and appearance can be restored. The process starts when we apply a special conditioning gel. This gel slightly etches the tooth enamel in order to make it easier for the resign to bond with its surface.

The bonding agent is then applied to the tooth and sculpted into the desired shape. The color of the resin is chosen to match the color of healthy, natural teeth. The amount of resin that the dentist applies will depend on the degree of damage that needs to be repaired.

After the dentist has finished the application and sculpting of the resin, he or she then hardens it with a special high intensity light.

Tooth bonding can be used to repair tooth decay, chips in tooth enamel, minor cracks in tooth surfaces, gaps between teeth, misshapen teeth, and teeth that are either too long or too short. In many cases, it can also be used to whiten teeth that are stained, although it is not a true replacement for professional tooth whitening services that may be needed for badly discolored teeth.

There are basically two types of cosmetic bonding. The type that you require will depend entirely on your situation. It will be based upon how small or how large of a correction your teeth require to fully function and to look attractive when you smile.

Tooth bonding can be finished in only one office visit if all that is needed is the replacement of small fillings or repairs to minor cracks. These one appointment fillings simply require matching the appropriate color of resin to the color of teeth and bonding the resin to the surface for added strength.

More complicated procedures, however, will require more than one visit. We see this happen when bonding is used in conjunction with a more complex procedure, such as a post and core or a dental core without a post.

The cosmetic resin fills in the tooth interior that has been destroyed by decay and the subsequent root canal that was performed to save the tooth. Molds are taken of the teeth in these procedures so a dental crown can be made to cover the tooth. Since the lab has to make this crown, the patient will have to return for a second visit when the crown is fitted and cemented in place.

Anyone with small gaps between their teeth, chips in their teeth, or cracked teeth can benefit from tooth bonding. This restoration procedure is also very effective for patients who have discolored teeth, teeth of varying lengths, tooth decay, and even gum recession.

Tooth bonding is very strong and will produce a lasting outcome. It will definitely improve how your teeth look and function. However, if you smoke, keep in mind that cosmetic dental resin is porous and can be stained by cigarette smoke very easily.
