While many industries are losing jobs, the health care field continues to grow. As baby boomers age and Americans just are generally living longer than ever before, the demand for health care is high. Those wanting to join the health care field have many choices available to them, from administrative jobs to patient care jobs. There are entry level jobs available as well as medical jobs for those who have or are willing to get advanced schooling and training.

If you have visited your doctors office lately, chances are that you may have seen a physician assistant rather than the doctor. This person will handle much of the same duties of the doctor, but they must be supervised by the doctor. This is a fast growing field. Plan on two to three years to become a physician assistant.

There is a need for medical secretaries to do the administrative jobs that are required in a doctors office, clinic, hospital or nursing home. Many employers will not require education beyond high school or a GED, but if you are competing against other applicants for the job, it will benefit you if you have had some medical secretary training. Strong clerical skills are a plus, too.

Medical assistants do some clerical jobs as the secretary does, but they also are trained to handle some basic medical procedures. The medical assistant generally will take a patients temperature, blood pressure and medical history. They may also draw blood and collect other lab specimens. You can complete training to be a medical assistant within a ten to eighteen month time frame.

As the demand for more health care grows, there is a need for more physicians, surgeons and nurses to treat patients. Aspiring doctors and surgeons can plan on spending eleven to sixteen years in college, post college and residency training. It takes four years to become a registered nurse and one to two years to be a licensed practical or licensed vocational nurse.

There has also become a greater need for more pharmacists. Much of the college education that is required for a pharmacist is the same as a doctor, but a pharmacist can receive their degree in about eight years. Also working in pharmacies are technicians and assistants. The pharmacy tech assists the pharmacist and works under their supervision. Some pharmacies will not require a technician to be certified, but they usually desire someone certified to fill this position. To be a pharmacy assistant, you should have good customer service skills as you are the first contact person the public sees. A pharmacy assistant job is usually entry level.

Many people are beginning to start a home based business as a medical biller or medical transcriptionist. The medical biller is responsible for sending bills to the insurance company for treatment that the patient received. Billing clerks typically work in hospitals, clinics and doctors offices before becoming an independent contractor working from home. A medical transcriptionist must have a strong understanding of medical terminology as well as good listening skills. You can complete training in a little under eighteen months to become a medical transcriptionist. Just as medical billing clerks do, many medical transcribers will work in an office to build up their skills before beginning to work from home.

During a time when many jobs are going away, many medical jobs are becoming available. Those who are looking for their first job as well as people wanting or needing to make a career change will find many choices available to them in the health care field. It is simply a matter of finding the job that suits your talent and the schooling that you have or are willing to obtain.
