If someone were to tell you that you could get a great aerobic workout that strengthens core areas of your body purely by sitting, you would probably think it was one of those fitness scams that promise amazing results with little or no effort. Or you would jump and shout for joy because now you could finally sit on the couch and watch the game while burning all those calories you're sitting on.

But I'm not talking about either of those. I'm talking about indoor cycling. No, I'm not talking about encouraging you to take your 10-speed for a spin around your living room or kitchen.

What I'm talking about is the exciting workouts that you can do with stationary bikes, which can be found in most fitness centers and can even be personally bought to put in your home. They have been growing in popularity because of the convenience that they offer and also for other health benefits.

Indoor cycling, or "spinning" as it is sometimes called now, is gaining momentum in many of the minds of America's fitness junkies. Here are some quick facts about it and some benefits of this exhilarating but easy way to work out.

In a class setting, a spinning instructor will be at the front of the class with his or her bike leading the other bikers through the workout. Each session is different, and range in different difficulties.

One great thing about this way to get in shape is that spinning classes try to simulate a real-world situation. They will simulate sprinting with the bike, climbing hills and other variations that will make the workout seem as natural as possible.

Another crucial benefit to this type of exercise is that the user can go at his or her own pace, because the stationary bikes can be set to different adjustments that can make it easier or more difficult. This makes it even more desirable because anyone ranging from an Ironman triathlon winner to a soccer mom of 3 can get something out of this exciting routine.

One of the adjustable features includes a piece of equipment called the flywheel. The flywheel is meant to simulate the natural effects of inertia and momentum in the environment, and it can be tightened or loosened in order to increase or decrease the level of difficulty depending on the rider.

You can also change the speed at which the pedals turn, which can give you exactly the type of routine that you want. Pedaling faster and harder will increase your heart and give you a better workout.

The seat and handlebars of the stationary bike can also be adjusted to accommodate different sizes and shapes of people. This also helps in making sure the exercise experience is comfortable for each person and that no injuries will be sustained over time.

Once you start the ride, the workout can be tweaked even more by the way that the rider positions his body on the bike. There are three different positions that can be beneficial: forward, middle, and rear.

The ear position is mainly used only for warm ups and cool downs, when the rider needs to slowly increase or decrease their heart rate. For this position, you put your hands at the center of the handlebars.

The middle position is used either when the person is seated or standing during the exercise routine. Most of the routine is spend in this position.

The forward position is only used when the rider is standing. For this position, they put their hands on the outermost part of the handlebars so they can use the most power for the hardest parts of the routine.

Finally, a great advantage of spinning classes comes because many classes are taught with rock or dance music to motivate you. This will help you get through the workout and get pumped up!

Another great advantage is that you can take a class with your friends! You can motivate each other and cheer each other on.

So try your luck and take a spinning class! You just might find that it could be your next fitness obsession.
