Developing a Habit of Running

Many people make New Year's resolutions to run and set renewed exercising goals at the beginning of a new year. However, a very small percentage of these people actually succeed in establishing a habit of running and do not continue the exercise past the third week of the year.

There are many different strategies that can be used to motivate yourself during a run. One of the best running tips around is to find something to help your mind pass the time.

With today's electronics and gadgets, our attention is whizzing from one thing to the next. We are used to having many different things demanding our attention at once.

While we run, there is very little that demands our attention and it is very easy for the mind to become bored and give into the complaints of the body. Over a very short time period, the resolve weakens and you seek something you feel is more 'constructive' because it entertains the brain and makes time pass quicker.

However, this is very detrimental to your body and yourself. Many people find that music is the ideal way to distract their mind while running.

When running becomes especially difficult, they switch to a particularly upbeat song that keeps them motivated and running. Some people prefer to watch television or read a book while running on a treadmill.

Others find that running with a partner is the most effective way to keep running. This partner may be a spouse, friend, co-worker or pet. This partner can help you stay motivated and running when it becomes difficult because you will feel pressure to keep up with them.

Conversation can keep the running pace slow, which can be either good or bad depending on what level you and your partner are on as runners. Other people find that signing up for a running event such as marathon or 5K event.

They feel that since they have spent the money, it is important that they train for it. The end goal of running for the event instead of the thought of endlessly running throughout the years helps them stay motivated.

Another option is to join a local town running club. These clubs have members of all levels for running, from beginning to advanced.

These clubs often have motivational meetings and events. These events are great places to meet other people who you would be able to run with if you do not have someone you can ask to be your running partner.

These runners will also be able to suggest great trails for running in your area, as well as tips on what to think about or do as a beginner. If you cannot find a local club in your area, there are many on-line running forums that can be joined by anyone.

A couple of the available running forums include the Runner's World Magazine Forums, the dailymile.com Forums, the Runner+ Forums, and the Cool Running Community Forums. The wealth of knowledge on these sites can be tremendously helpful and motivational when just starting out.

Do not feel the obligation to add your own experiences and insights to the site from the beginning, but you can add them as you feel the need. The motivation you need to keep running may be a combination of these things, or a completely different strategy all together.

As you find motivation, you will be tempted to add miles quickly. However, this will only tear down your resolve and make it much more difficult to run.

The generally rule on adding miles is to only add ten percent of what you have been running every week. As time passes, you will find that this is a significant amount of running, but it will keep you on the right track and help you get in shape quickly without becoming too difficult.

Running is a worthwhile activity that can save you thousands in medical bills and help you keep a healthy attitude. Finding the right source of motivation can be difficult, but it is infinitely worth the effort.
