Halitosis or bad breath can be discouraging and frustrating that even the closest of friends might not want to talk with you. Especially if you are working around with people, it is important to always check your breath, or have someone tell you if you do have a problem with the smell of your breath.

Getting rid of bad breath can actually be done at home, as there are simple things that you can do to put and end to this problem. Keep in mind that halitosis or bad smelling breath may just be something that you can just handle easily so take time to put an end to this. Also take note that you may never know if you have bad breath but can be distinctly known by others.

To help you in getting rid of bad breath, here are 10 tips that you may find useful.

- Avoid drinks and beverages that can dry the mouth and make it more favorable for bacteria to thrive and cause halitosis. Examples of these are caffeine-containing beverages and alcohol.

- Avoid alcohol-containing mouthwash that can also dry the mouth and cater to odor-causing bacteria to thrive.

- Brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to free them from food particles and bacteria that may cause this breath problem. Get yourself a tongue cleaner to help you thoroughly clean your tongue. If the surface of your tongue has turned into something whitish, you may need a thorough cleaning to make it rosy pink.

- Drink plenty of water to hydrate your mouth and avoid caffeine-containing beverages that may also dry your mouth and make an environment good for bacteria to thrive.

- Make sure you are free from tooth decay. Cavities on the teeth can be a major cause of bad breath, thus you have to make sure that you are free from cavities. Visit your dentist to get rid of cavities and tooth decay. Make sure also that you make your teeth free from bad smelling breath.

- Watch your diet. What you eat can be a cause of your bad smelling breath. Onion, garlic and many other spices cause this problem and one thing that you can do is to chew a sugarless gum after meals and make sure that you brush and floss your teeth after each meal.

- Quit smoking for good. Even if you have been smoking for a long time, you can still find ways to end this habit that will not only give you bad smelling breath and yellow teeth but also put your health at risk as well. It can be difficult to overcome this addiction but you can seek help from professionals to help you get over with alcohol addiction.

- See your doctor for persistent bad breath. If you have done everything in getting rid of bad breath but it won't go away, you may have an underlying condition that causes this problem, thus it is just wise to seek an expert to help you diagnose any further problems.
