Bulimia Defined

The bulimia eating disorder may be described as a condition that distorts one's view of his or her body image. Even if the person is slim, he or she may see a fat individual in the mirror. This image distortion can be one of the signs of an eating disorder, one of which is bulimia.

A bulimic person more often than not cannot help but engage in binge eating, then, afterwards, feels guilt, and so decides to fast, and, oftentimes forces himself or herself to vomit. Some bulimic individuals even drink laxatives in order to remove the large amount of food they have eaten from the body.

Most information on bulimia will tell you that the said condition is similar to another eating disorder: anorexia, but is said to have a lower rate of mortality compared to anorexia. Bulimia is also considered a form of psychological disorder, and has nothing to do with any digestive problems as believed by some people.

Causes of Bulimia

As of now, doctors cannot really pinpoint exactly what may bring about bulimia in people. There are of course some factors that are considered causes, but, there is no exact formula that can tell you what should be blamed for the said eating disorder. Before thinking of treatments for bulimia, of course, you first have to understand what may trigger the said disorder.

Below are some of the factors that are believed to trigger bulimia eating disorder:

1. Genetics

Many health experts believe that certain genes make people susceptible to bulimia. For instance, if your family member is bulimic, there is a big chance of you getting the disorder yourself.

2. Family influences

Other doctors may tell you that the influence of your family can be one of the causes of bulimia. Some bulimic patients actually feel unaccepted by their family, thus, they resort to binge eating as a way to relieve their negative feelings, and can begin to develop bulimia.

3. Change in serotonin levels

Serotonin is one of the chemicals of the brain, that, when increased or altered leads to depression, bulimia, and so on. Most psychological illnesses and mental disorders are said to actually result from abnormal serotonin levels in an individual's brain.

4. Peer pressure

Information on bulimia will also tell you that bulimia may also result from peer pressure. For instance, a chubby teen-ager with skinny friends has the tendency to experience a bulimia eating disorder. Another example is a fat girl wanting to please her boyfriend so she wants to lose weight badly. Magazines and other forms of media may also contribute to the progression of the bulimic disorder in some people.

Getting the right information on bulimia is one of the very first steps to discovering treatments for bulimia. You can gain information not only through research, but also by asking a specialist. If you are worried about having a bulimia eating disorder, or feel that your loved one is suffering from it, look for complete information on bulimia immediately, and then seek professional help.
