Hiking requires no great skill. A good, sturdy pair of hiking boots is recommended. Perhaps, a travel water bottle and a snack may be a nice diversion. For uphill hiking, a walking stick is a good idea. Next is the core of what hiking is all about: finding the perfect hiking trail.

Where The Hiking Trails Are Located
Hikers fall into the same categories as some of the established hiking trails: beginner, intermediate and advanced. These trails are geared for different levels of stamina and endurance and are often color-coded for convenience. Hiking can be done in any weather and at any time of the year. It all depends on the level of expertise. Trails are located in most areas where a national or state park exists. The Appalachian Trail is one of the US's three longest trails, along with the Pacific Divide Trail and the Continental Divide Trail.

Why Do They Hike?
People who love to hike up steeply inclined trails or wander down wooded hiking paths find a particular sense of relaxation even amid the strenousness of this activity. The scenery is always alluring and there is a treasure of species of birds and other animals to complete the enjoyment of an afternoon hike. There is one other overriding factor that draws people who want to be close to nature: the opportunity to be outdoors in fresh, clean air and beneath a bright, sunlit sky. Or, for that matter, a joyous chance to walk in the rain on a summer day.

The "How To" Of Hiking
Wear comfortable clothing. For heavily wooded areas, tuck trousers into socks to prevent insect bites. Wear a long-sleeved shirt to protect arms. Carry insect repellent in areas where insects are abundant. It's never a good idea to hike alone. A sudden storm or other difficulty can arise at any time. If a cell phone is not in the planning, carry forestry service phone number and know where the nearest phone is located. Keep water bottles filled. Mountain streams are sources of potable water. If the hike is long-distance, make certain food supplies are adequate before setting off. A backpack should contain a first-aid kit in the event of minor injury. Departure time should be discussed with family beforehand so that if an injury or accident occurs, there is a window of time for them to take action.
