So you've made a great decision and decided to buy an elliptical trainer to use in your home. You've probably looked on Google, EBay, in the classifieds, or even gone to a fitness equipment salesman to find the right one for you.

But you're probably figuring out very quickly that elliptical machines can be quite expensive! Some stores might even add a moving fee if you feel it necessary to have help moving it from the store to your home.

All of these costs can add up and put a strain on your wallet. There is, however, a way that this strain can be alleviated.

It could be a great idea to buy an elliptical trainer used! It can greatly reduce the cost while giving the same results if you find the right one.

Many of you might think it is a bad idea to buy fitness equipment secondhand. After all, the first thing that may come to your mind when you think of secondhand is when your mom took you to the Salvation Army that smelled like your grandma's house.

You might be thinking that a trainer that has been used previously might be low quality and won't perform as long as you want it to. You might end up with one of these if you are not smart, but it is easy to make wise decisions when purchasing so you can end up with a trainer that is just like new.

Here are some great tips to keep in mind when buying a secondhand elliptical machine. You'll thank yourself later if you follow these simple steps!

The first and most important thing to remember is to do your homework! If you buy a secondhand machine on a whim you might regret it later on. When you find the right place or person to buy it from, make sure you know everything about the piece of equipment. Figure out really how "used" it is.

If it is an older piece of equipment, make sure the seller is not ripping you off. Usually if it is older, it will yield a lower price because the quality decreases.

Make sure you know how much wear and tear the trainer has gone through. If you're buying it used from a gym or workout center, keep in mind that hundreds of people have probably used the machine over several years.

This will mean the trainer will be closer to the end of its days. If you're buying it from a single person or family, ask them how often they used it and how hard they were on the machine.

Also take in account that if you buy an elliptical used, it might not come with a warranty. If you buy them new, you will have the security of knowing that it can be replaced if it breaks down suddenly.

If you buy them used, you again have to know what quality of product you're buying, because you will have no protection if it breaks down. Make sure you're getting an elliptical that will be dependable so you're not out of luck after it breaks down after a couple days from buying it!

When talking with the seller, ask them if you can briefly test the elliptical out. Make sure that the machine is up to the standard that you want it to be.

You can check the motion of the trainer to see if it is still smooth. An old trainer might have a rougher motion that wouldn't be desirable.

Check other important specifications of the elliptical to see if everything is working smoothly. By doing this, there will be no surprise when you try it out for the first time at home.

Keep these tips in mind when you are making your purchase! By being informed about the buy that you are making, you won't have to deal with a big hunk of junk in your home that you don't even like!
