Most people fear the thought of having a stroke. This fear is not only because a stroke is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world, but also because if a person survives they have a strong possibility of losing normal basic body functions of daily living. The mere act of eating, walking, talking and taking care of oneself could be lost. Many stroke victims have to relearn all these basic human functions. The lucky ones will see a near total recovery, while others will continue their stroke rehabilitation for months to years and might possibly be confined to a long term care facility with skilled nursing care. The rehabilitation process takes many forms. This recovery may include physical therapy, medicines and natural products to speed up the recovery process.

When the brain is damaged, information is not processed properly. Physical therapy will help the patient by improving the function of muscles and joints. Range of motion is usually limited after a stroke. This causes pain and limited movement ability. Exercising the body will help by improving muscle strength, balance and coordination. Time is crucial in stroke rehabilitation. Therefore, physical therapy is generally started within a few days of a stroke or as soon as the patient's medical condition has been stabilized. Physical exercise will not only improve the patient's current condition but will help to reduce the possibility of additional strokes. In addition, exercise will help control weight, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Doctors generally prescribe medications to prevent from the risk of a second stroke and many people are opting for natural treatments in addition to their prescribed medication. Chinese medicine has long been known to encourage herbs and natural supplements that help in the stroke rehabilitation process. Many believe that when these supplements are taken as a regular part of a healthy lifestyle they could help prevent a stroke from occurring. Since a stroke is the lack of blood flow to the brain, also referred to as a brain attack, the recommended herbs and supplements focus on improving circulation and blood vessel strength, nourishing the brain and in helping to keep the arteries clear of bad cholesterol known as LDL.

No one ever wants to imagine themselves or a loved one being faced with the issue of a stroke. But should it happen, it is comforting to know that with today's modern medicine techniques, physical therapy and natural treatments for stroke rehabilitation we have the hope of recovery and methods for future prevention.
