Lost the car keys yet again? Or you find it hard to remember the name of the person in front of your office a few minutes ago? These are signs of aging and brain decay, and many health professionals are pointing to brain supplements as the thing that can help arrest the slide of brain activity. Are brain supplements really the answer? A careful reading of the advertisements for brain supplements reveal that these products do its part in helping the brain become more competitive. But a look at medical studies and researches will reveal a somewhat different picture. These researches and studies suggest that these supplements are not that strong enough in helping the brain.

One such supplement is fish oil. Based on the studies that were made on fish oil, it was learned that the consumption of this product do have effects on the brain and also lower the risk of dementia for many old people. But the results are not conclusive enough to clearly say that fish oil can be considered as one of the best brain supplements. In the study made on fish oil it was learned that even though the item will have no significant effect on brain development, at least the oil has no negative effects on the person's health.

Another supplement that has taken the market by storm is the Gingko Biloba. This is another safe supplement yet without proven health benefits. The results of the studies are mixed as well, and some of these studies and researches do suggest that the Gingko somehow improves blood flow and also protects the nerve cells. Vitamin E is also part of the growing list of brain supplements. In many studies concerning Vitamin E, it was found out that low doses of this supplement is helpful for the body but large doses of Vitamin E will do more harm than good to the body. To be exact, it should be remembered that patients with bleeding problems are not advised to take the supplement since this may result to interactions.

With these mixed results on brain supplements, what should one do? Before jumping into the supplement bandwagon, it is recommended that you talk these things first with your health professional. This is necessary since your doctor knows your medical history, and the professional can make recommendations as to what brain supplements are best for you and what supplements to avoid.
