Discovering Why the Elliptical is so Popular

Elliptical machines are growing in popularity and demand as a component of a home gym. These machines are also sometimes referred to as cross-trainers.

Ellipticals are stationary exercise machines that allow an exerciser to walk or run without the added impact on joints that a treadmill or normal running would cause. This significantly reduces the risk for injury while exercising.

These machines offer a wide range of intensities at which a person can perform. To change to intensity at which they work, the exerciser simply has to change the level of resistance on the pedals.

A workout on an elliptical is considered to be a cardiovascular workout. This machine was developed by Larry D. Miller for Precor and released in 1998.

Miller created the idea of the elliptical when he was watching his daughters run at a track meet. He watched the way her legs moved and wanted to create a machine that would allow the running motion without the impact that hurt joints.

Today many of the elliptical also provide a workout for the upper body. Some people are disappointed when the elliptical does not help them build muscles.

However, this was not what it was intended for. The elliptical was designed with a cardiovascular workout in mind.

It is also not well known that there are three different types of elliptical trainers based on the motor. The oldest type of elliptical has a "rear drive" type motor.

The middle aged elliptical features a "front-drive" motor. With the most recent elliptical being designed with "center-drive."

Some of the more advance elliptical the incline of the roller ramps can be altered to give different pedal motions. When changes are made to how the exerciser walks, the exerciser will be required to use different muscles.

As a result, these varying muscles will be strengthened to provide for a complete workout. The more advance models can change the incline, resistance, and stride length during a workout program.

Many people who work out also prefer the option for the pedals to go in a reverse direction as well. This will also work more muscles groups than simply running in a normal fashion.

Most elliptical programs are powered using the legs in the running motion. However, the arms can also play a significant role in keeping the elliptical going if the legs become tired.

The handles should be less than shoulder height to make the pushing and pulling motion as easy as possible. This pushing and pulling motion combines with the running motion of the feet provides for a complete body workout.

The handles are connected to the feet pedals to provide for ideal running posture. Machines that are improperly designed allow the exerciser's arms to tag along, but not actually do any work.

A proper model will make both the arms and the legs work together. There are many different types of ellipticals available to match the various environments that they will be performing in.

For example, some elliptical machines are designed to withstand constant use and have great durability for use in a fitness gym. The average price for an elliptical of this quality is $4,000.

These units usually also have more programming capabilities and options that a home user would never use. A model designed for a home gym could cost as little as $500.

There are conflicting studies as to whether a treadmill or elliptical workout burns more calories or whether they burn the same amount. The argument that an elliptical workout will burn more calories is supported by the fact that the elliptical works more muscles.

Even thought the elliptical may be working an exerciser harder, he or she will not feel that way. However, others have conducted studies that show that the calories burned on an elliptical are equivalent to those burned on a treadmill.

Even if the amount of calories burned on a treadmill and elliptical are the same, the benefits of lower risk of joint injury make the elliptical the idea choice of the two machines. By avoiding injury through proper exercise a person will avoid pain, not being able to work out, and expensive medical bills.

If the elliptical is made part of a home gym it can contribute greatly to your health, confidence, self-esteem, success, and happiness. An investment in an elliptical is well-worth the money involved.
