Let's take a trip back to seventh grade. You might have known that kid everybody loved to hate that wore coke-bottle glasses, suspenders, and had his Trapper Keeper filled with the latest rules to Dungeons and Dragons.

You might also remember that he had enough metal on his teeth to be found by a metal detector. Those, big clunky braces made him look like a kid version of Robocop.

Nobody wanted to be that kid, and nobody wanted to have braces because of it. They were unattractive, uncomfortable and got you a hot date for Friday night about as well as halitosis would.

For this reason, you might have shuddered when you're mom said it was your time to get those metal molars that would kill your social life. You opted out of it because of the sheer embarrassment you wanted to avoid.

Now its thirty years later and you have two kids of your own. It's about that time where they need braces, and your teeth are still looking a little crooked themselves.

Luckily, times have changed, my friend. No longer do you have to settle for those nasty "grills" in your teeth.

While the traditional method is still an option given by orthodontists around the world, there is a new type that will bring a smile to your face when you hear about them.

They are called invisible braces, and they are exactly how they sound. They are clear, plastic aligners that do the same work as traditional braces, but without the ugly appearance.

Before you pull out your checkbook in glee, let's take a little bit of time and look at how invisible aligners work. They actually are made with some of the most sophisticated dental technology out there today.

When going in for this new treatment, your dentist will take impression of your teeth. He will then take those impressions and scan them into a computer.

The computer then "plans" how your teeth will move. It then designs 12 to 48 sets of aligners that will be manufactured and that you will continually put into your mouth for the duration of your treatment.

When your dentist gives you the first set, you will put it in and realize that the aligner doesn't quite fit. This is because your teeth will get used to the new equipment and move until it fits into the retainer-like product.

Once feel comfortable in one set of the aligners, your dentist will give you a new pair that, once again, won't fit. Your teeth will continue to move into each successive pair that you wear until they are at the position that you and your dentist want.

There are a lot of benefits that invisible braces have over traditional ones. The first is the obvious upgrade in appearance.

Invisibles basically look like clear retainers and you can hardly see them. A second benefit that they have is the procedure takes less time than the traditional procedure.

An average invisible treatment is on average about 12 months, which is far shorter than old-fashioned treatments that can go from 2 to 3 years. The third benefit comes because they are comfortable.

You don't have to worry about cutting your gums on sharp, jagged edges or having a sore jaw for weeks at a time. While there might be some discomfort when you get used to the new aligners, they are much more comfortable than the metal.

The invisible method is not for everybody, though. They are not optimal for those who haven't fully developed all their teeth or for those that have severe crowding or other problems in their tooth line-up.

There are other scenarios where this new treatment wouldn't be the best option, but for many it could be a great opportunity. The invisible treatment is usually best for adults and older teenagers.

If you've always wanted to improve your smile, this could be a great way to do it! In as little as one year, you could have that beautiful smile you've always wanted.

Many doctors around the world are trained and certified to treat with invisible braces. Check if your doctor is certified so that you can get started right away!
