If your young child or teenager lives with a condition that requires the constant wearing of medical identification, you know how hard it can be to get them to wear it without fail. The truth is, kids hate to stick out or appear "different" from their peers in any way: that old ugly metal ID bracelet seems un-cool and a bother. Over the last several years, new options for medical identification have appeared on the market, much to the relief of parents and kids alike! Here's what's new.

--No more "ugly" medical ID bracelet: Today's bracelets look nothing like their predecessors; they come in a wide variety of fashionable styles and colors. For girls, there are multi-colored bead designs and even bracelets that change colors according to her mood! Boys can choose from several different designs that feature rugged braided leather straps. The medical identification is still there, of course: it's just not blatantly obvious and your child can also be stylish.

--Dog tags and other tags: If wearing a bracelet isn't practical, dog tags may be the way to go. They are especially popular with boys and men and can be slipped under any shirt. Tags are great for putting on athletic gear such as slipping over shoe laces when wearing jewelry items is impractical or not allowed. There are tags that can be easily attached to the zipper of a parka for a day of skiing too. These types of tags are especially useful for small children or vulnerable adults who tend to remove and lose their medical identification.

--Temporary tattoos: Ideal for toddlers and small children who are away from the watchful eyes of their parents, a temporary tattoo can alert care givers of a medical condition at a glance. Applied directly to the back of the hand, it is a visible reminder to adults that may save your child from allergic reactions, consumption of diabetic-hazardous foods, or any one of a number of other potential problems.

It's hard enough to get your child to understand the importance of wearing their medical identification without the jewelry always being so "ugly" and impractical. Fortunately, there are choices now and plenty of stylish ones that kids will actually want to wear! Take the time to search the internet to find reputable vendors of the newest in medical ID bracelets and other items and let your child have the pleasure of choosing his or her own stuff; you may never have to remind her to wear her ID again!
