It seems like the elliptical machines have gotten a bad rap in recent years. They are thought of as being much easier to work out on than a treadmill.

The treadmill and the elliptical machines are two of the most popular machines at any gym or local area. Both of the machines are very important for working out and both can give you a great cardio workout.

Treadmills have been around for a long time. Elliptical machines have not been around for as long as treadmills have.

If you are trying to find a machine to buy at home, you want to make sure that you get a good idea of the pros and cons of each of the pieces of equipment. Honestly assessing how you want to work out will affect the decision you make.

First, you have to realize that you will have a very low impact workout on an elliptical. When you are working out on an elliptical you will not have any contact with the ground which can be extremely beneficial.

There are a lot of people that may get frustrated with running on a treadmill because of how hard the contact with the ground can be on their joints. Whether it is your knees, ankles or even your hips the contact with the ground can really do some wear and tear after some time on the treadmill.

On the other hand if you do not have any joint problems and running on the treadmill does not hurt your joints you have to realize that the contact with the ground will also help your bones grow stronger. The contact can be a good thing.

Talk with your doctor if you do not know which would be better for you. Your doctor will know what your joints can handle and will be able to advise you as to what your best way to work out is.

If you are looking to train as a serious jogger or runner, a treadmill will have some serious advantages. When you are running on a treadmill you will be much more prepared to run or jog competitively.

When you are training for any type of running race you have to understand that a good treadmill will be the best option when you are training indoors. The best way to train for these races is to workout outside in the elements that you will be running in.

If you are not training for a race, an elliptical can give you some great results. The cardiovascular benefit that you will have from using an elliptical is very efficient compared to how much effort you put into the event.

When you use the handlebars as well as the foot pedals you can get a full body workout. When you are running on a treadmill, it is not good to hold onto the handrails.

On a treadmill the handrails are not beneficial at all they can actual be damaging to your form and take away from your workout. This means that when you use an elliptical you have a better chance at getting a full body workout.

Elliptical machines have gained a lot of popularity because the elliptical machines allow people that have a hard time working out on a treadmill to still get a cardio workout. The elliptical is a great way for the elderly to get a workout.

As we age our joints and bones get more and more brittle. Working out on a treadmill can worsen the joint situation of an elderly person and is not usually recommended.

There are a lot of physical therapy patients that also use the elliptical because they do not have the strength required to use a treadmill. For some people, using an elliptical is the best option for getting a cardiovascular workout.

Adding variety to your workout is something that is also manageable when you are working out on an elliptical. You can adjust the resistance and even the incline that you are working out on.

When you are shopping for exercise equipment do not be afraid to take your time. You do not want to make an investment on something that will end up collecting dust in the spare room for a few years.

The more you know about your preferences and the ability of the piece of machinery the better off you will be. You may even be able to find your equipment lightly used, which would dramatically decrease the cost without reducing the quality.
