Do you like brushing your teeth? If you do, you are probably in a very small minority.

Many people around the world don't take the time to clean their pearly whites for many different reasons. Some may feel it takes too long, so they might forgo it altogether.

Others might think it hurts too much, especially when they press those prickly bristles on their sensitive gums and it hurts a lot. Then there are the thousands of people who are just too lazy; they would rather do something much easier instead of cleaning their teeth!

Unfortunately, all these excuses that might make their way into your brain can be a serious detriment to your health. Oral hygiene is one of the best ways to fight the things that can corrode and destroy your teeth-things like plaque, gingivitis, and cavities.

One reason that people might skip out on oral hygiene is that they simply don't know the proper procedure that they need to take when cleaning their whites. This can lead to poor performance in cleaning or they might not clean them at all.

My job is to inform each of you of the proper way to clean your teeth. It is easier than you think and can save you hundreds of dollars and make your smile even more beautiful.

The first step is to find a good toothbrush. Most professionals agree that a soft-bristles toothbrush is the best way to keep your mouth disease-free.

For others who might not like the idea of using a manual toothbrush and expending all that energy (I know, it is so hard!), there are many powerful electric toothbrushes in the dental hygiene market.

These are powered and can automatically spin the brush head so that you don't have to. All you have to do is put it on the surface of your teeth and have at it.

These also have some advantage over manual toothbrushes because they move extremely fast and can remove more plaque because of their speed. Whatever type of brush you choose, make sure you are comfortable with it and it does not hurt your teeth.

Next, you need to pick out the right kind of toothpaste. The best way to figure this out is to talk to your dentist or hygienist about which would be the best kind for you.

Your dentist will know what diseases or problems plague your mouth, so they can help you decide which paste will be best. There are many different kinds of toothpastes in stores, each one targeting a specific problem of the mouth.

Toothpastes can target cavities, gingivitis, bad breath, or sensitive teeth. Choose the one that will solve your biggest oral problem.

Next, it's time to actually clean your teeth! You need to spend at least two minutes, or 120 seconds, brushing. This will ensure that they are thoroughly cleaned.

If you have trouble brushing for that long, try using a stopwatch or other timing mechanism to make sure you are going for the whole time. Doing so will help you get used to cleaning for that extended amount of time.

When you are cleaning your whites, it is best to use short, gentle strokes over the whole area of your mouth. Focus on the gums, teeth that might have crowns or fillings or those that are hard to reach and don't get cleaned very often.

Cleaning the gums will ensure that they won't get swollen or puffy, which could cause pain or discomfort, especially when you bust your toothbrush out at a later time. Also be sure to gently stroke your tongue, which can freshen your breath and get rid of nasty bacteria that will make your breath smelly.

Replace your toothbrush when it looks well worn, or every 3 months. It is also important to remember to replace it after you have had a cold or other sickness.

If you are sick and use a toothbrush, germs can sit on it for a long amount of time. If you use the same toothbrush when you are healthy, you increase the chance of becoming sick again.

Follow these simple steps every day when you are brushing. You won't have as many problems when you go to the dentist and your smile will look amazing!
