People working 10-11 hours daily are more likely to have heart problems than those working regular 7-hour days. During an 11-year study of 6,000 British civil servants published in the European Heart Journal, there were 369 heart disease deaths, non-fatal heart attacks and angina cases. Independent of risk factors like smoking, high cholesterol and being overweight, the risk of heart problems was 60% higher for those who worked 3-4 hours overtime. Stress caused by long working hours interferes with metabolism, which can lead to heart disease. This is information to take to heart - and to bosses.

Air pollution is something else that can lead to heart disease. After spending 6 years reviewing dozens of studies, the American Heart Association determined inhaling pollutants causes lung inflammation, which causes other negative body changes. Although the elderly and those with underlying heart conditions are most at risk, particulate pollution from traffic and industry can trigger heart attacks in healthy adults too. In fact, those living within 100 yards of a major roadway are 50% likelier to have heart disease. The fact 58% of Americans live in areas with unhealthy air is enough to take your breath away.

The fact processed red meats increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes could take your appetite away. In a review of approximately 1,600 worldwide studies, Harvard researchers determined unprocessed beef, pork and lamb didn't raise the risk. However, eating 1.8 ounces daily of bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs or processed deli meats was linked to 42% higher heart disease risk and 19% higher diabetes risk. Although both types of meat contain similar amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol, processed meats contain 4 times more sodium and 50% more nitrate preservatives. It's the additives that seem to be the "meat of the matter".

The "heart of the matter" is sex is safe after a heart attack. According to a study presented at an American Heart Association conference, it's safe for heart attack survivors to have sex if they can walk up 2 flights of stairs comfortably. The study of 1,760 survivors - average age 60 - showed that a year after their heart attacks 66% of men and 40% of women had had sexual activity. However, heart attack survivors were 30%-40% likelier to have sex if they'd discussed it with their doctor. Of course, they could take 2 aspirins and call him in the morning.
