Unless you have been living under a rock for the last decade then you will be only too aware that health and safety has become a major factor around the office and in the environment in general. If you happen to have the job of office manager then it will be your responsibility to enforce the health and safety policies around the office, which can in some senses be a bit of a poisoned chalice.

No-one around the office likes performing health and safety training and they like it even less when people have to start to enforce policies around the office. People will always claim that they know all the procedures that you will be teaching them and that they have performed this training hundreds of times before. As an office manager I have heard all of these excuses and several hundred others. Luckily I'm also fortunate enough to know that just because someone has performed training before it doesn't mean that they know what they are doing, nor does it mean that they will perform the training correctly.

I've personally seen several employees that have vigorously claimed that they don't need to perform health and safety training within our company because of previous training experience, lift boxes with bent backs and carry objects that obstruct their view of the path ahead. Now that is just two blatant violations of the rulebook there and I've seen several more which I dare not even to mention.

When I see someone performing one of this basic tasks incorrectly, I usually calmly walk up to them and correct them on the way they should be performing the task and calmly and precisely explain that this is exactly the reason why it is vital that all new employees within a company perform a mandatory health and safety course.

Different companies, work in different ways, so please do not assume because your employee has performed training at another organisation that they will be clued up on the way that you run the policy within your particular organisation. You need to remind the employee that if they had an issue that was created because of an injury it would be the company that is liable and therefore that is why you insist on having these training courses.

If you don't have anyone in-house who can perform the training, then there are a number of companies on the internet that can be hired to provide you with training or training packages to help assist you along the way. To find out more just perform a quick search in Google or Bing search engines.
