There are many people that do not understand the importance of having a food storage unit in their home. In the unlikely occurrence of a natural disaster or any other type of disaster a food storage unit could end up saving your life.

You have to realize that the people who depend on you for food will need you to have food for them at all times. Even if something happens to the grocery stores and the surrounding food sources you depend on.

When the food that you depend on is no longer available, you have to have another source. For many people this means that you should always make sure to have enough food to support your family for a sufficient amount of time.

Some people feel that three months worth of food is the minimum amount of food you should have. This means that for every person in your family you should be able to provide three months worth of food.

Although this may not sound like a lot of food, it can be a massive amount. There are a lot of companies that specialize in making foods that can last a long time and can be stored compactly.

The food that is stored in your storage unit should have a long shelf life. If you do not purchase food that can last for a long time you will constantly have to be rotating the food on your shelves.

This can be extremely frustrating when you are leading a busy life, because if you forget to rotate the food you may end up wasting a lot of money. The food that is about to expire should be used and the food with the farthest expiration date put to the back of the shelf.

When you are rotating the food you will be ensuring that you do not end up with rotten food in your cupboard. The food that is in your cupboard should not be rotten because it may do you more harm than good when you need it.

If you feed others or eat expired food you may end up getting very ill. When you are in a dire situation and medical attention is not plausible this could potentially be lethal.

Another common mistake when setting up a food storage unit is that of not having enough water. When you first begin to plan to have a food storage unit you should make sure that you make having enough water your first priority.

If you do not have enough water the rest of your food will not be helpful in the least. As you are going to store your water you should remember that you do not want it to get contaminated and you want it to last.

Buying plastic water bottles that are sealed and are PETE plastic can be a good way to store water. This can be more expensive than other methods but you will be able to have the water that you need when you need it.

You should make sure that you always abide by the "use by" date that is stamped on the water bottle. Using the water past that date can be dangerous.

If you are going to use this method you will want to use the water that is getting close to the stamped date as soon as you realize that date is coming up. Forgetting to rotate and use the water that is expired can result in you losing a lot of money.

Do not put yourself in that situation instead try to stay on top of the rotation schedule for your water. There should not be any expired water in your food storage unit at any time.

Some people prefer to package their own water. This can be a great way to save money, but you have to make sure that you do this properly.

The only containers you use should be food-grade containers. There are smaller containers that are made of PETE plastic that work well for this use.

Make sure that the containers you are going to use have been sanitized thoroughly before you start to put your water into them. You should never use plastic milk jugs or even containers that were previously used to store non-food items.

When you have to drink the water that you have stored yourself you can improve the taste of the water by pouring it back and forth between two containers. You will then be able to hydrate happily.
