In the past, the world of Latin dance has been considered an exclusive group-a cultural monopoly. However, if you haven't heard, this is no longer the case!

Latin dance has been spread to the masses, and given the right shoes and a little hip action, anyone can do it. Whether you are in a social class, a club, private instruction, or just dancing in your living room, Latin dance is a great way to get in shape.

Originating in Latin America and Cuba, dance was used as a way to celebrate events, express passion, and present a set of rich cultural values. It still holds a crucial place in the history of this beautiful culture.

There is a wide range of dances under the umbrella of Latin dance. These include the Rumba, Samba, Salsa, Mambo, Tumba, Paso Doble, Cha-cha-cha, Bolero, Bachata, Cumbia, Danza, tango, and many more.

Probably the most crucial element of Latin movement is what is referred to as "hip action." This essentially means the flexibility and range you give your hips, and the sensual part they play in every move.

If you are beginning a social Latin ballroom class, chances are you will encounter about four dances. The first is the romantic Rumba.

Considered one of the most sensual and seductive dances, it focuses on slow Cuban rhythms, and the physical connections between partners. It was derived from London dance teacher Pierre Zurcher-Margolle, who travelled to Cuba to study Latin dance movement.

The next dance you will encounter will be the energetic Samba. The Samba is a dance of playfulness and fun. Its roots are in Brazil, and it was traditionally a carnival celebration dance.

Bouncing into your knees while going through the fast paced steps will help to tone your legs and butt. Don't forget to have fun with this one-it is a party!

If it is drama you enjoy, the Paso Doble will be a favorite for you. Full of rage and passion, the Paso Doble is a reenactment of a bullfight.

Acting like a Spanish march, it focuses on the masculinity of the male partner, and the fragile sensuality of the female. Sharp steps and rich poses allow the audience to be dazzled by the fierce nature of this dance.

The last dance you will most likely encounter in a beginning class is the Cha-cha-cha. While danced traditionally to Cuban music, a more modern approach will couple it with pop and even rock music.

Pierre Zurcher-Margolle also composed this dance from a study of the Cuban dance culture. It has become one of the most popular forms of social dance in modern society.

Some unique factors include the fact that the steps do not begin on the first beat. The second beat originates the movement, and carries the two-three-cha-cha-cha beat.

Hip movement and beautiful footwork make this an exciting way to exercise your whole body. Note the stretch and pulse you will begin to feel in your calves as you move your way through the steps.

Shoes play an important role in the outcome of your overall fitness. For women, a particular type of heel is typically worn, ranging from about two and a half to three and a half inches in height.

The bottom is made of soft flexible leather, and allows the foot to point and flex as needed. It may feel foreign and uncomfortable at first, but you will find that your feet will quickly adjust to your new height.

Your apparel generally consists of a skirt for females, and Latin pants and a shirt for men. Be playful with your clothing-it can be half the fun!

While you focus on the different movements, try to tighten your abdominal muscles. You will find that this will make an immediate difference in your posture, while helping to strengthen the core muscles that will flatten your stomach.

Latin dance classes are becoming fiercely popular in gyms all over the country, as well as community studios. You will find that it is a wonderful way to make new friends, find your inner passion, and bring your body to a whole new level of physical fitness.
