Training, it is an important part of development. We're all learning every day of our lives and we only stop learning the day that we finally say goodbye to this world. Although there are many life lessons that can be learnt along the way, maybe some of the easier lessons that we learn are based in the office or our place of work, as we learn things like team building, synergy and health and safety training.

As an office manager I have often had to be the bearer of bad news to the members of staff within our organisation. Not many people like taking health and safety training and most will attempt to get out of taking it if they can. Although I would assume that 60% of us have at some stage in our lives undergone some form of health and safety training, I would estimate that 70% of those people don't follow the rules once they have left the training programme. How many times have you seen people around the office lifting objects with bent backs as opposed to bent knees? Or how many times have you seen them walking with objects obstructing their view?

You will always get people who claim that they don't need to take part in the training package; they will attempt to convince you that it is a waste of the companies and their time. However, I usually reply that if they don't take the training then the company could be liable in legal issues should an injury occur and ask them whether they would be willing to sign a waiver to signify that they refused training. At this point the individuals normally change their opinion on taking the health and safety training.

Although a lot of the aspect of health and safety training might seem fairly obvious at first, you would be amazed at how many different insights and revelations a refresher course can do. How many times do you see people walking around the office with a pair of scissors with the blades pointing forwards? How many times have you seen electrical wiring dangerously overloaded temporarily? All of these issues can be easily avoided if you and the other employees within your organisation work together to avoid these situations in the first place.

There are lots of different ways to organise health and safety training in 2010, you can either utilise computer based training, in house training or hire a professional company to come in and train your staff. Whatever option you do decide to use, whatever you do, don't skimp or avoid training your staff. It could save you and your employees in the long run.
