Understanding Benefits of Running on Treadmills

Many wonder if they are getting the same health benefits by running on a treadmill as they would by running outdoors. There are benefits to both and ways to ensure you are getting the best workout possible while training in either location.

Some enjoy running outdoors in the summer time but find it difficult to continue when the weather turns cold, dark and even icy. During these rough conditions, many turn to the gym and indoor equipment to get their calories burned and to keep their bodies in shape.

Generally, you will receive comparable workouts as long as you are exerting the same amount of effort. There are many tricks to simulating an outdoor run while on the treadmill such as adding at least a 1% incline to your settings.

There is typically a slight decrease in energy expenditure while training on a treadmill because of the lack of natural obstacles like wind resistance. Also, some have found a decrease in results because the belt does propel you along a bit.

Adding this 1% incline will help you exert more energy than you would if you were walking or running on flat pavement outdoors. However, treadmills often allow more shock absorbance which is gentler on your joints.

If you are training for an outdoor training or walking event, you can still do some of your training indoors. The majority, about 60%, should be performed outside though.

Your muscles and joints will be better prepared if you continue to incorporate training outdoors. Also, the weather and uneven terrain cannot be targeted exactly indoors.

You will have to train some outside to prepare for nature's obstacles. Other stunts like turning cannot be performed on a treadmill, and your body should become accustomed to adaptations in roads and pathways.

There are many positive attributes about treadmill training such as no weather, temperature or terrain issues. You can stop anytime you need or want to and workout while watching television if you like.

Its smooth and cushioned surface is easier on joints. Personal safety concerns are also much fewer indoors than outdoors with traffic, weather conditions and dark streets.

In addition, there are also many bonuses to training outside. You can run anywhere you like while enjoying the scenery, fresh air, changing seasons, weather and nature.

Training outdoors is generally more challenging which burns more calories. It can also be more motivating if you set distance goals and can gradually see yourself getting closer to those goals.

Most people have reported a greater feeling of accomplishment from running outside too. You can take new routes and see something new every day which can be a great escape.

Thus, there are probably more benefits to training outdoors. However, if the outdoors are unfit due to weather conditions or pavement on your joints, treadmills are a great option to enhance your training accessibility.

Also, if it is important to you to watch television or read, then the treadmill may be your preference for walking or running. It is a great way to always have a cardiovascular workout available.

Often times, injuries can force your training indoors as well. For example, if you have shin splints, the treadmill will be gentler than a sidewalk or pavement.

They are great tools to work yourself back up to walking, jogging or eventually running. Also, with the decreasing quality in the air and atmosphere, running inside can be better on your lungs and respiratory system.

For example, if you normally run outside along busy streets or in large cities, it may be a good idea to use an indoor treadmill from time to time. You will breathe in fewer toxins while avoiding asthmatic and harmful conditions.

Due to the mixed benefits of both indoor and outdoor cardio training, it is probably a good idea to rotate and participate in both to increase your results. That is a sure way to yield excellent results in your body and overall cardiovascular health.

As long as you are using the equipment right, training indoors will always have benefit for you. It is just important to remember to return to nature from time to time.

Just remember to stay informed about technical developments in cardio equipment. Remember to also train on varied terrains to keep your body agile and quick.
