McDonald's is recalling over 12 MILLION promotional drinking glasses because they are contaminated with the toxic heavy metal Cadmium. The drinking glasses which are being used to promote the new Shrek movie have been pulled from all McDonald's stores because Cadmium is a key ingredient in the paint used on the outside of the glasses. The paint is used to depict the main characters of the movie. While not immediately harmful the danger comes from long term exposure when the paint rubs off onto the hands of those that use the glasses.
Cadmium is an extremely toxic heavy metal that is dangerous and can cause serious health problems at even very low levels. Can is common in industrial areas where manufacturing exists but it is also found in smog, batteries, ceramic glazes, cigarette smoke, fungicides, soil(so it is also in your grown foods), tap water and PAINTS! Cadmium is a known Carcinogen and has been suspected in lung and prostate cancer. It also effects the lungs, kidneys, softens the bones by displacing calcium, heart disease and autoimmune thyroid disease. I am sure that Cadmium toxicity and Cadmium Poisoning may cause a whole host of health problems that are not listed here or has been tested for.
One of the main societal problems with heavy metal toxicity is that it is rarely suspected or even tested for. If you ingest a large amount of Mercury or Cadmium then yes it will be suspected in any subsequent health problem. But toxic heavy metals are absorbed slowly over time and the onset of symptoms or health problems may take a long time to manifest so there is almost no way to PROVE a one on one correlation. I feel that everyone should be tested for heavy metal toxicity since EVERYONE will have toxic heavy metals present in their bodies, its just a matter of which ones, how much and how they are affecting you.
