As I was glancing in the mirror a few weeks ago, I was sad to notice that the skin on my face was looking dull, flat--a little sickly. There were even a few flakes of skin threatening to come loose. It happens to all of us on occasion.

So how do we get back that picture-perfect, glowing complexion? Allow me to share my best solutions with you.

First off, you need to make sure that you are on a regular cleaning regimen. At the very least, you need to wash your face every morning and evening, but if you suffer from problem skin--acne or oiliness--you might want to add a gentle toner, which you can use three times each day. Avoid toners that contain alcohol, as these might over-dry and cause your skin to produce more oil.

Every time you cleanse, you should also use a light moisturizer on your face and neck to keep the skin supple. You ought to also add a non-greasy sunscreen every time you step outside. After all, a sunburn glows, but probably not in the way you want it to!

Many cleansers now include small particles that are meant to exfoliate the surface of your skin, which means that they slough off the dead cells, which can cause that dull look. However, too much exfoliation can end up being too harsh, so you may want to reserve these cleansers for two to three times a week.

You should occasionally treat your skin to steam. Sit in your bathroom with the shower running hot for a few minutes--usually five to seven minutes will do the trick. This is a way to perform an easy at-home deep cleansing.

Steam treatments are helpful at home, but you should also take regular trips to your local day spa and have a facial. Most spas offer a variety of specialty treatments for exactly your skin type and your needs. If you are in a hurry, there are often "half facials" which only last twenty or thirty minutes but will still do wonders for your complexion. So don't hesitate to get in touch with a spa in your area.

If you use cosmetics, you need to make sure you are watching the labels. Look for products that are "noncomedogenic," which means that they are less likely to clog your pores and cause blackheads and other acne flare-ups.

Make sure that you are sticking to the basics of good health. Drink lots of water, eat right, and take a multivitamin. You will be surprised at the amazing results of common sense!
