I was talking to one of my brothers the other day, and I was saddened to hear him report that he was smoking a pack of cigarettes per day because of the stress his job causes him. Even though I disapprove of smoking, I felt more grief than displeasure because my brother had established an unhealthy way to blow off steam and release stress.

We all deal with stress in our daily lives, and if you find yourself in a position where you are feeling more tension and strain than usual, you might wonder where your breaking point is. You might have developed some bad habits of your own to cope. But you have to start developing constructive ways to release your stress. Let me give you some suggestions.

First of all, it is important to recognize when you feel your best--and I mean really your best. Is it when you are with your spouse, your friends, or your children? Is it when you are dedicating leisure time to a favorite hobby? Is it when you are out driving on the open road?

Recognize what it is that makes you the happiest, and make sure to work a healthy dose of it into your week. Make sure to schedule time for it--whether it's a family game night on Tuesdays or an evening on the town with your pals every Saturday, planning in advance gives you something to look forward to.

Second, make sure that you are healthy. Cover all your basics every day. Eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep. Taking care of your body will certainly effect your overall feelings of well-being, even when you find yourself in an undesirable situation.

In addition, you need to exercise. Find something to do that breaks a sweat every day. Being active produces endorphins in the brain, which in turn reduces your body's stress response. Find something that helps you to blow off steam. Kickboxing was a great option for me, but that's just one idea.

Give yourself "you" time. Ask your spouse and children to excuse you for half an hour every evening while you read a book, take a bath, or listen to your favorite music. Or, as an alternative, you can take Saturday afternoon to yourself. Get a massage or search the sales wrack at the mall.

If the stress you are dealing with is just too much, even with some of these suggestions, don't be afraid to contact a counselor. There are many low-cost clinics, or, if you attend a college or university, you can sometimes see a professional for free. There's no shame in dealing with your stress in a healthy way.
