One of the most interesting topics in psychology is hypnosis. But not a lot of people know what hypnosis is. Most people misconstrue the concept of hypnosis and think that is something that interferes with a person's free will. If you think hypnosis is a way to manipulate and control a person's mind, then you are correct. But if you think it's a way to control a person and his thinking altogether, then you're mistaken. Hypnosis lets you program certain things in to a persons mind, but it can never totally override the brain's original programming. If this was the way hypnosis worked, don't you think the world would be overrun by mindless zombies by now?

In order to understand hypnosis, one has to learn more about its core concepts, like how it works. Hypnosis can be a bit tricky. Hypnosis explained technically can be a bit confusing. Not all people can grasp the many concepts of neurology and psychology. For regular people, it is best you have hypnosis explained in layman's terms. This will help you better understand how it works. If you refer to psychology book, you'll have hypnosis explained to you in technical terms. It is better to look for short articles (such as this one) and read the more condensed and simplified version of the explanation. So here is hypnosis explained in a nutshell:

The process of hypnosis is very simple. It is done by programming certain suggestions and instructions repeatedly onto the subconscious of the mind. This process is call hypnotic induction. Hypnotism can be administered in two ways: It can be administered by a hypnotist; or you could do it to yourself. A big misconception about hypnotism is that it is supposed to be done when a person in unconscious. The truth is full attention should be devoted when being hypnotized. This means you cannot be hypnotized if it's against your will. At times, even if you are willing and ready for the hypnosis, it's hard to get it through. And since this is so, you should throw any ideas about hypnotism being a form of mind control out the window.

What happens in hypnosis is simple. The brain is given direct instructions, which get registered in the subconscious part of the brain. This is done because the subconscious dictates involuntary acts, meaning one does not need to think hard in order to do the instructions. Hypnosis is most effective when a person is in a relaxed physical state, but has focused mental concentration. The body has to be absent of stress and strain. All focus has to be put on absorbing the instructions. This increases the penetration of the instructions. If hypnosis is successful, the mind's subconscious will automatically enact the instructions whenever applicable.

That is hypnosis explained in a nut shell. Of course, there are many layers and technicalities within these steps. To learn more about hypnosis, consult with a psychologist or read a book that specializes on the concept of hypnotism.
