Your relationship with your doctor is one of the most important professional relationships you have in your life. Sadly, we frequently underestimate its significance in our society, even as pharmaceutical advertisements frequently encourage us to "talk to [our] doctor."

But if you live with chronic pain, such as that caused by accidents or sports injuries, or from diseases of the muscles and joints, there is another health professional you need to become acquainted with: a chiropractor.

First off, you need to understand that while a chiropractor's goal is to alleviate pain you are feeling in any portion of your body, they generally focus on the alignment of the spine. This is generally to your benefit in the long run, as relieving the spine of unnecessary pressure improves posture and can help to reduce pain throughout the body.

But on the other hand, some ailments are unaffected or possibly worsened by chiropractic care, so be sure to consult with your general practitioner and the chiropractor before proceeding with adjustments or other treatments.

Depending on the nature of your condition, you may want to be seen by an emergency chiropractor, who generally specializes in injuries sustained in serious automobile accidents. Their aim is to administer relief as quickly as possible. They may refer you to another chiropractor for long-term management.

If your need for relief is not immediate, then you have more options available to you. Try to find a specialist based on the recommendations of colleagues, friends, and neighbors rather than pinpointing one in the phonebook. This will already give you a head start in finding someone based on the good experiences of others.

However, before making an appointment for an adjustment, you should do some research of your own. Many chiropractic offices now have websites of their own which detail their methods and approach to treatment.

But if you can't find a website for a chiropractor that has been recommended to you, go ahead and contact their office. Even if you are unable to speak to the chiropractor, they often have an office staff that can be tremendously helpful in dealing with your questions and concerns.

If you have a specific condition you are seeking to deal with like me--I have fibromyalgia--then you will want to ask if this specialist has a background in treating cases like yours and what kind of results you can expect, both short and long-term.

Be wary when they boast of outcomes that sound too good to be true because they usually are. But if you are invited into the office for a consultation, don't pass it up unless you are certain their treatment methods aren't for you. This chiropractor could become your new best friend!
