Relay brings together more than 3.5 million who have been touched by cancer is some way; I'm sure that cancer has touched your life as well. Teams gather at local high schools, parks or fairgrounds to camp out and take turns walking around the track. Because cancer never sleeps, the teams have a team member on the track at all times during the overnight event. Teams have fund raising events prior to and at the event. Team members ask their family and friends to participate and/or donate to their team.
Why do I Relay?
I'll never forget the Saturday morning my wife was still laying in bed after a long work week and the phone rang. It was her parents calling to tell her that her dad had cancer.
They told her that the doctors caught it early so she wasn't to worry. Right.
Her grandfather died of cancer when she was in Junior in High School. She told me she couldn't forget the look in his eyes after months of chemo and weight loss. She imagined she would soon see the same look in her dad's eyes and it terrified her. It's been nine years now; and her dad has been in remission twice and still fighting hard to win the battle, We are both so proud of him.
My Father-in-law - a Cancer Survivor - now age 76 is the reason that we both Relay.
Five years ago my wife read an article in the Tracy Press about Tracy's Relay for Life.
We both knew that it was something we needed to be part of. Not only to show her dad support but also to help the many people still yet to be diagnosed with Cancer. My wife asked her boss if she could form a team at work; and she was off to her first Relay meeting. She told me how amazed she was to see how many dedicated people were pouring their hearts into this cause; This year her company, Taylor Farms has agreed to be a Gold Sponsor and she is proud to once again be the Team Captain. Our team goal is to raise $5,000 through fundraisers and by asking family and friends like you for donations.
How can you get involved with your community's Relay for Life event?
There are many ways that you can get involved with Relay. Find out where and when your local community holds their annual event. Either join an existing team of someone you know or form your own team with work colleagues and/or friends. Because so many lives are affected by cancer, you'll be amazed how easy it is to get people involved.
The strength of our survivors inspires others to continue the fight against cancer. Fight Back!
