This is something that I think should be done in every town in the U.S. and around the World. Toronto, Canada is adopting guidelines to help citizens grow food on their property safely and with minimal exposure to toxins including heavy metals. Home gardens are on the rise in Toronto and the city government wants to help the citizens grow food that is safe and free of contaminants. The Toronto Board of Health on Tuesday adopted a food strategy, which includes a plan to create guidelines for soil safety. While the plan is short on specifics through further study they will adopt more guidelines as time goes along.

Some of the basic recommendations include growing food away from buildings since rain runoff will carry toxins from the roof or sides of building into the soil like paint, cleaners and built up grim. Also people who live close to industrial areas or manufacturing plants should have their soil tested for toxins and heavy metal content before they plant their gardens. Homes built on or near apple orchards may also be at risk because lead arsenate was once used as a pesticide. While the testing is not provided by the program they do plan to make it more available for residents. If the soil is to toxic for growing food then you can replace it with other soil that is known to be safe and toxin free.

There is a large movement going on around the world to buy foods that are grown locally and I feel that this program fits right into that. With locally grown food it takes less energy to bring the food to market plus you would have better quality control with locally produced foods. You could potentially make some urban areas primarily food producers instead of food consumers. Like with what the European Union is trying to do with energy, make each home an energy producer, we make each home or community a food producer. This will put much less of a burden on our food supply and cut down on our dependence on pre-packaged foods which will make the population much more healthy.
