What To Expect When Getting A Cavity Filled

Many people are afraid of the dentist. Most are only afraid because they are uncertain of what to expect. If more people had a realistic idea of what to expect, they would most likely no longer fear stepping into the dentists' chair. Of course, there are some people who have had bad experiences with dentists and these people most likely will have a harder time getting rid of their dental work fears. For those, though, who are simply uncertain of what to expect regarding cavities, read further.

Of course, the first thing any dentist will do is check your teeth to see if there are any problems. Sometimes patients will take x-rays if the dentist in question is not certain about whether or not there are cavities. Most dental insurances cover routine x-rays. If the dentist does decide to give an x-ray, the dental assistant will most likely do it. The assistant will ask the patient to open their mouths and then stick a plastic device of sorts in between the side molars. The assistant will then ask the patient to clamp down and bring an x-ray machine up to the jaw line to snap a picture. This does not hurt, nor does it take long.

Once the dentist has identified which tooth or teeth need to be filled, an anesthetic of sorts will be given. This helps to numb the area around the tooth to help avoid pain. Of course, the dentist wants to make sure that all patients are as comfortable as possible and will therefore give as much anesthetic as necessary in order to rule out all possibilities of pain. If the anesthetic is injected using a needle, the patient can expect to experience slight discomfort when it is injected. It will take about ten minutes to take effect and then the patient is ready to proceed.

The dentist will proceed to use a drill or other similar tool to remove the decay out from the tooth. This step is incredibly important. If any decay is left, it could lead to a bigger problem as time moves on. The drill or similar tool used for removing the decay may apply pressure; however, it should not cause pain. The nerves surrounding the area of concern should be numbed from the anesthetic. After that, it can be expected that the dentist will fill the cavity with filling and finish up by polishing it.
