A treadmill can be a fun and easy way for you to exercise in the comfort of your own home. The best part is you won't have to pay those expensive gym membership fees anymore!

If you buy a machine new or slightly used, then it will probably be a good fitness companion for years to come. It could possibly outlast many of the other machines and appliances in your home.

Granted, treadmills do get worn out like every other machine on the planet. It is important to regularly clean and maintain it so it can have the longest life possible.

If you clean it on a regular basis, it should work quite well for a long period of time. Things happen, though, and sometimes your treadmill will sputter out and stop working.

So what do you do in this situation? Do you shrug your shoulders and go to the nearest fitness center and buy a new treadmill for thousands of dollars? No!

Aside from major problems, it can be quite easy to fix your equipment by yourself. Here are the steps you can follow to get your treadmill up and running again:

If the machine has no luck trying to turn on, the first thing you need to do is check your power supply. Many people think there are problems with the machine itself when really there is a problem with an external power source.

Make sure it is plugged and there is nothing wrong with your outlet; try and turn the equipment on once you do this. If it still doesn't turn on, you will need to go to the next step.

Before going to the next step, make sure you turn the power completely off. You wouldn't want to be sticking your hands in the machine when it suddenly turns on again!

The next step involves cleaning the inside and the outside of the treadmill. Sometimes, dirt and grime builds up on the parts.

This muck can slow down the function of the parts until eventually it could stop the machine altogether. Take a clean cloth and wipe down the entire machine, especially the belt.

After you do this, try and turn the machine on again. If it still doesn't work, you can go to step three.

Many times the belt on your treadmill is just worn out and it needs to be replaced. While you will need a replacement, actually replacing is a simple task.

Once you have the replacement, remove the front of the machine until you see its innards. Loosen the fasteners that hold the belt in place with a screwdriver.

Take the used one and switch it out with the new one. Make sure the new one fits properly and is the right size for your type of equipment.

If the new belt fixes the problem and it works again, you still need to make sure the belt was installed properly. Start by turning it back on and trying out the treadmill.

If you put on the new belt improperly, you will start to smell burning after a small period of use. This is a sign that the belt is misaligned.

If you smell burning, look at the belt again and re-align so that it is put in properly. Repeat the previous steps again to make sure you don't have burning problems anymore.

If any of the above steps still don't work, you might have a problem with your motor. Usually this will include having to buy an entirely new motor from the manufacturer.

If that doesn't work, you might be out of luck! If you know of any treadmill repairman you could have them take a look at it, but these are the signs that you probably need to buy a new one!

If you follow these steps, you will get a lot more life out of your piece of equipment. And you will see that it is so easy that you can do it by yourself without any help.

Always clean the belt and other parts every so often. This will ensure that you don't have any serious problems, so you don't have to follow these important steps as often.
