An elliptical trainer is one of the more modern machines out there on the market today. They are so popular because they are low impact and can be a great addition to any cardiovascular routine.

It is obvious that they can give added strength to the heart and muscles, but they can also give increased strength to something else very important: your bones. Using an elliptical can be amazing for your bones.

One of the best ways it can benefit your bones is how it can prevent osteoporosis. You may have heard of osteoporosis before, but have never really known what it is.

You probably have heard of it because your grandma or another elderly friend has suffered with it. Osteoporosis is more common among the elderly, but the onset of it can start way before that.

Osteoporosis literally means "porous bones". If you show symptoms of the disease, your bones become less dense over the years, and as a result they become more brittle and there is a much greater chance for you to sustain injury to them.

What makes it so dangerous is that you can hardly notice it for years and years until it seriously affects you. Your bones will slowly become weaker as you become older.

It won't be until you're in the older stage of your life that the symptoms will start to present themselves. Then, it will be too late to reverse the damage.

Symptoms of this disease can include fractures. The bones are so frail and weak that even one fall or trip could mean a bone breaking and serious injury coming with it.

This could cause permanent disability or even death if it is serious enough. This is why osteoporosis is sometimes known as a silent killer because it creeps on you unnoticed until it suddenly ravages your life and brings a lot of pain.

Luckily, osteoporosis is preventable. There are many things that you can do to ensure that you have a lesser chance for this harmful disease.

In this article, I will talk about how the elliptical trainer can be beneficial in the prevention of this disease. First, let's talk about how a certain type of exercise can be very beneficial in prevention.

For those adults who think that they might be prone to frailty, one of the best things that you can do is to perform weight-bearing exercises. What exactly is a weight-bearing exercise?

It is any form of fitness where your whole body is supported by your legs and spine. This could be anything from walking or running.

This type of fitness is crucial because the constant weight pressed upon your body can increase your bone strength and make them less vulnerable to weakness. Doing these types of exercises regularly is very important.

So you can try weight-bearing exercises such as running, but in the end these exercises will give you pain in your hips, knees, or other types of joints. Your bones will be very strong but your joints will have increasing pain and you will just have a different kind of problem!

This is why the elliptical trainer is such an ideal machine. It accommodates and solves both problems.

When using the elliptical, you will be doing a weight-bearing routine. You will be standing upright, moving your legs, and putting all of your weight on the lower part of your body.

You are also being friendly to your joints. Elliptical trainers are a "low-impact" machine, which means that they have a more natural flow and are less abrasive to your joints.

These are the two reasons why the elliptical trainer can be the perfect piece of equipment for any adult who thinks that they might be at risk for osteoporosis. You can do yourself a great favor and use this piece of equipment to lessen your risk.

It will also be beneficial because you will still be getting a great cardiovascular workout while you are strengthening other parts of your body. You don't have to sacrifice any part of your training when you are using an elliptical trainer!

Go to your local gym to use one or go to a fitness equipment store to buy one for your home. You won't regret the decision.
