Treadmills can be a great way for anyone to get a workout; especially if you have one in the convenience of your own home.

By having one in your own home, you can experience the joys of running. It is also beneficial because you walk or jog during the winter, or when there is less than optimal weather conditions outside.

Your treadmill will give you a lot of satisfactions over many years of daily running or walking. To make sure that your machine gives you the best that it can give, you need to perform routine maintenance on it so that it can have a longer life.

One of the most important things you can do to give your machine a longer life is to lubricate the parts. Just like a car, your machine needs to be properly oiled so that it can run well and perform for miles and miles.

Lubricating your treadmill is simpler than it sounds. You won't even need a trained professional to come and help you do it, because it is easy enough that you can do it with your own hands.

So how exactly would you go about doing this? Here is the step-by-step of how you can properly oil up your precious piece of fitness equipment:

First, you need to make sure the machine is unplugged. This can prevent you from running into serious hazards.

Lubricants are liquid-based and if the treadmill is still hooked up to electricity, it can present a real hazard to you and anyone else that might be around you. You do not want to mix these two things!

Also, it can be dangerous because you never know when your machine might spontaneously turn on for no reason and start operating. If you have your hands in the equipment and it suddenly turns on, you could sustain major hand or arm injuries.

Once you have unplugged the equipment and prevented those dangers, you can now get to the fixing. Start off by taking the back or the bottom off the treadmill so that the inner parts are showing.

Usually, you can use a simple screwdriver to do this job. Just unwind all of the screws on the part until it can easily come off and you can see what's inside of the machine.

Once you have done that, it's time to run a quick inspection. Even if you're only oiling up certain parts, this can be a great time for you to check if there is any other major problems that your belt might have sustained.

Check to see if there is any wear and tear on the belt or any other parts. If there are any rips, tears, or anything else that looks wrong with the parts, it might be better to replace these parts just for safety's sake.

Next comes the actual lubrication of the treadmill. Take the lubricant or oil that you have previously purchased, and apply it to both the drive belt and the tread belt.

Apply the oil to about six inches of each belt. Once you do this, you can use a clean rag and softly rub the oil into the belts so that it soaks in.

Make sure not to rub too hard, though, as this will dry the lubricant and the belts will not be properly oiled. Now it is time to put the coverings back on.

Put all the necessary equipment back where it needs to go and then screw it in with the screwdriver. Make sure everything is tight and in its place.

Now that you have successfully lubricated the treadmill, you need to test it out to see if it runs smoother. Turn the machine on and put it on a low setting for a couple of minutes.

This will give you a good feeling of it your maintenance has worked or not. It will also give the machine time to run and evenly distribute the lubricant throughout the belt and other parts.

When you've tested and all seems to be right, you are finished. You should be proud that you have successfully fixed a complicated machine with your own hands!
