Over the past few weeks we have seen several news stories concerning the revelation that drinking glasses promoting the new Shrek movie and being sold at McDonald's, contained the toxic heavy metal Cadmium in the coloring on the outside of the glasses. Due to this information McDonald's issued a voluntary recall of all the glasses. While I give McDonald's credit for doing the right thing once this information came to light this situation should never have come to pass.

One of the positives to come out of this potentially dangerous situation was that it spurred the U.S. House of Representatives to take positive action. Rep. Henry Waxman as part of a larger inquiry on toxic heavy metals in consumer products asked McDonald's to turn over all documentation concerning the policies and procedures that they have in place to ensure that their products to not contain hazardous substances. Even though McDonald's did not manufacture the glasses themselves they are responsible to the public since they sell them directly. The recall was voluntary because the amount of Cadmium on the outside of the glasses do not violate existing standards, since there are none pertaining to Cadmium for products like these but only for children's toys, but it does exceed the level that is allowed under regulations that will take effect very soon. These new regulations will encompass a much broader array of products that are intended for use by children and not just toys. This is very good news for all consumers.

This begs a larger question. In 2010 why is our Federal Government just now getting around to regulating the amount of a toxin in children's products, or consumer products in general? The fact that Cadmium is very dangerous has been known for a very long time but no detailed, encompassing regulation exists to protect consumers from possible contamination? I feel that the government needs to set up a regulatory agency with the specific charge of finding out which of all the tens of thousands of chemicals and toxins that are available are safe and which are not. This is a serious health threat to all Americans and it has not been taken seriously at all by our Government.
