Do You Need Braces?

Usually someone tells you that you need braces when you are about nine or ten years old. Your parents force you to get braces and then you are stuck wearing them for the next five years.

A young girl who was about nine years was recommended to get braces. As a baby, she had sucked her fingers like many other babies do.

Instead of putting her thumb in her mouth and sucking on it, she would take her first two fingers, turn them upside down and stick it in her mouth. Her mother thought that it was super cute, so she never tried to stop her from sucking her fingers this way.

It was easy for the mom to let her continue to do that because she never had to worry about grabbing a pacifier for her baby. She would just let her baby soothe herself.

But eventually the baby got older and passed the stage where she should have stopped using a pacifier or sucking on her fingers. The mom finally stepped in and started making an effort to stop her child from sucking her fingers.

The mom never thought that it would be that hard to get her child to stop putting her fingers in her mouth. She tried everything she could think of. She put some gross tasting cream on her little fingers so the child would not want to put her fingers in her mouth anymore.

The mother also tried to bribe her kid. For example, if the child could go for an hour without putting her fingers in her mouth, then the mom would let her watch a favorite television show that day.

Then the mom tried to punish the child when she put her fingers in her mouth. If that happened, the mom would make the child sit in timeout for about five minutes or so.

Nothing that the mom tried to do was working at all. She asked her doctors, friends, family, and other professionals for advice, but nothing seemed to work.

So how did the child finally stop sucking on her two fingers? It took her until she was five years old and in kindergarten before she stopped.

It took seeing all the other children her age teasing her about sucking her fingers before she decided that only babies putting their fingers in their mouths before she had enough self control to stop. If only the mother had tried to stop her from continuing this bad habit earlier, then she would not have had such a huge problem later.

Because of this, the child had two front teeth that stuck out really far and moved a few other teeth around the wrong way. It was obvious she needed braces and she was able to get them a couple of years later.

But not everyone has an extreme experience like this or teeth that obviously show that they should get braces. Some people grow up into their thirties or forties before they decide that they should get braces.

Adults shy away from getting braces because they are embarrassed to have them. It is only acceptable in our culture for children to have braces.

But there should not be any reason for them to feel this way. There are many adults out there who really need to get braces, but choose not to because either it is too expensive or they just do not feel like it.

There are options out there that let you choose how you want to straighten your teeth out. They have the almost "invisible" braces that are clear and hard to tell that you are wearing anything to straighten your teeth.

They are basically clear plastic aligners that you put over the top of your teeth that slowly move them back into place with each phase you go through. They are changed every few weeks and a great alternative to the more traditional metal braces that most people wear.

So no matter what age you are, do not be afraid to get braces if you need them. After all is said and done, you will be a lot happier with your teeth and have a better smile than before.
