When you first join a gym it is very important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with the whole gym. It can be very difficult to step out of your comfort zone when you have just signed up for a gym, but it will be for your benefit.

Many gyms have personal trainers that are available for hire. If you do not have the money to work with a personal trainer you can ask if any of the trainers will do one free session with you to help you get used to the gym.

Many times they will do this free session with you, trying to sell you on their services. Even if you know you are not interested in a trainer you can always use the advice to help you decide what you want to do at the gym.

The trainer may also help you find new ways to exercise that are more beneficial for your body type. No matter who you are or where you have come from you can do some good for your body when you are at the gym.

When you have found a routine that you want to stick to, you have to make sure that you take the time to mix up your workout every once and a while. There should be many different ways that you find to work the muscles in your body.

Although it may be easy for you to come to the gym, hop on the elliptical and be done with your workout, you have to make sure you do more than that. Even if you are only comfortable on the elliptical you should make sure that you mix up your workout.

Many people do not realize how easy it is to spice up your workout. When you are using an elliptical it may seem that there is only one way or you to get your cardio workout completed while on the machine.

Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of ways that you can get your workout in without having to put yourself in an uncomfortable situation. You can actually work a variety of muscles and get a very efficient workout in when you are on an elliptical.

A great way to get your upper body working when you are on the elliptical is to use the handlebars. On many machines you can change the resistance setting on the machine so that you are able to find a way to intensify your workout.

If you feel that you are not getting an adequate workout for your arms by using the handlebars you can always use free weights. When you use these weights you have to make sure that you have a good sense of balance on your machine.

Some companies make gloves that are weighted so that you will get a better workout with your arms. If you are going to use free weights the gloves may be your choice so that you do not have to worry about holding onto the weights.

As you are using the elliptical try to exaggerate the swinging of your arms. Concentrate on the different muscles throughout your arms as you swing your arms and try to swing your arms with your muscles being taught.

It may take some practice to use your arms and work them when you are on an elliptical but it is absolutely possible. You can also give your legs a different workout by leaning your weight forward and trying to pedal on your toes.

When you are on your toes the primary concentration is going to be on your calves instead of your thighs. This concentration on your calves will help them to grow stronger much quicker than when you are not on your toes.

Be careful with going on your toes, it is much easier to hurt yourself because you lose your balance when you are on your toes. Taking the time to understand what you can and cannot do on the machine is very important.

If you feel that you are still not having enough variety you can try to pedal backwards. Push your legs up the incline of the elliptical instead of stepping down the incline.

This motion is going to work a whole new set of muscles in your legs. Your hamstrings will greatly benefit from being worked in this manner.

Being a new member to a gym can be intimidating, but instead of letting the fear inhibit your workout embrace the fear and use it to motivate you. When you change up your workout you will start to see results very quickly.
