One of the most annoying health problems a woman can have is called Bacterial Vaginosis. This kind of vaginal condition affects millions of women around the world. It is a condition where the woman affected will have a vaginal discharge that is yellowish in color. It also emits a foul smelling odor that is quite embarrassing especially after sexual intercourse. There are certain factors that may increase the potential for a woman to experience this kind of condition. They include smoking, multiple or new sexual partners, and cigarette smoking. It is important for a woman to know certain facts about this vaginal condition. She should take note of the common symptoms as well as how the condition is diagnosed.

When a woman experiences the common symptoms, which are the abnormal volume of vaginal discharge and the foul smelling odor, she should immediately seek medical advice. Though this kind of condition is not serious, it is important that she gets evaluated to make sure that she does not have a more serious infection. Such infections that may have pretty much the same symptoms with it include Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

When you go to a doctor to get evaluated regarding this condition, you can expect the doctor to ask you a series of questions. The doctor will do this to help him distinguish mild from more serious conditions. There are certain issues that will provide signs to the doctor of a possibility of a more serious condition. They may include pelvic pain, fever, and unprotected intercourse with new or multiple sexual partners. Another issue that may be included is if the woman has a history of sexually-transmitted infections.

After the short conversation with the doctor the usual step that would follow is a pelvic exam. Your doctor will perform this examination where he will inspect the appearance of the lining of the vagina as well as the cervix. Your doctor will examine the cervix for any sign of tenderness, since this is an indication of a more serious condition. You uterus and your ovaries will also be examined carefully by your doctor. Some doctors may need to collect samples for the purpose of checking for gonorrhea.

The discharge that is collected from the vaginal area will be examined under a microscope. This will be done to determine if the condition is yeast vaginitis, trichomonas, or bacterial vaginosis. After which the doctor may also perform a certain "whiff test" where he uses a potassium hydroxide liquid. When a drop of this liquid gets in contact with a sample of the vaginal discharge a certain fishy odor will result. There are several qualified doctors who can perform these tests for you. You can always ask your friends and colleagues if they know certain doctors they can recommend for you. Do not wait too long to be consulted so that you can take care of the condition early on.
