Ask any person who wears contact lenses, and they will tell you that this is one of the best inventions of the century. This is a corrective, cosmetic, or therapeutic lens usually placed on the cornea of the eye. Although these were originally introduced by Leonardo da Vinci, it was only in the 1970s that they became comfortable enough for people to use in their day to day lives. You will find today's contact lenses more comfortable, durable, and convenient. They are not just for vision, they are also for vanity purposes.

If you would like to opt for these lenses, first thing you need to do is check with an eye doctor. He will measure your eye, so that the lenses fit perfectly. All these lenses require a prescription, even if you are wearing them just to enhance your eye color. The main types of them are hard and soft contact lenses.

Hard Contact Lenses

They were originally made out of glass, but now are made entirely out of plastic. They are called RGP contact lenses (Rigid and gas permeable). These are the types of hard contact lenses that are usually recommended by many eye doctors today. They are more durable than second type that tend to tear easily.

Soft Contact Lenses
They get their name because they absorb water. They easily absorb all the dirt, soap, etc from your hands and may cause irritation to the eye. On the other hand, they stay in the eye more comfortably and for longer periods. They are an amazing alternative to all those who find hard contact lenses uncomfortable to wear.

Maintenance
Long term neglect and lack of proper maintenance of these lenses can cause serious and irreparable damage to your eyes. If not cleaned properly it will accumulate sediments, bacteria, protein, etc making your eye prone to all sorts of infection and adversely effect the clarity of your vision. While maintaining your contact lenses will not take a lot of time, it is important to do this everyday. Here is what you need to do.

1.The most important step is to wash your hands throughly, before inserting the lenses into your eyes.
2.Dry your hands completely before you insert the lenses.
3.Rinse your lenses daily- cleaning them by gently rubbing with your finger.
4.Clean your contact-lens holder regularly
5.Keep your fingernails short and clean to avoid tearing of the lenses
6.Be gentle always while handling them.
7.Use only the contact-lens solution, prescribed by your doctor. Using anything else may cause problems to reduce the life of your lens and infection to your eyes.
8.Never re-use the contact-lens solution
9.Sleeping with them on, is a strict no-no
10.Avoid wearing them for more than 8 hours everyday
11.Do not wear color contact lens for everyday use
12.Follow the instructions that come with your product.
13.Wear eye makeup after you put on them.
14.Use hair spray before you wear your contact-lens, so that no chemicals or harmful substances get into your eye.
15.If possible, go for disposable lenses, that you can throw away in months. They are not very expensive and help your eyes as well.
16.If you cannot maintain your contact lenses everyday, there is a solution for that- Buy daily disposable contact lenses, that you can wear and throw away everyday.

Keep in mind that if any irritation, pain or redness is detected in your eye, stop wearing the contact-lens at once. And visit the eye doctor as soon as possible, before the condition aggravates.
