If you own an elliptical machine in your home gym, chances are, a time will come when it needs a certain level of repairing. These machines are generally very sturdy and reliable, but motors can tire, things can begin to squeak, and parts just simply wear out after years of use.

Bringing your machine to a repair shop can be a huge pain to maneuver, and cost you much more than you actually need to spend. To save money and time, following these simple steps may help you to repair your machine all by yourself.

First, make sure you read the owner's manual thoroughly, to see if you can diagnose the problem yourself. Make sure that your elliptical is only handling the amount of weight that is recommended on in the manual.

The problem may be as simple as buying a machine that can't hold the weight that you or your family members are applying to it. Some less expensive machines cannot hold more than two hundred and fifty pounds.

If you buy a machine that is a little more expensive, falling more into the seven hundred to fifteen hundred range, you will be investing in a more quality piece that will last longer, and need less servicing. The more you try to scrimp in the beginning, the more costly the repair expenses you may encounter down the line.

If your purchase came with a warranty, check to see when it expires. A good machine will usually come with a five year warranty.

If it is under warranty still, call the appropriate number and a technician will most likely be sent to repair your equipment for free. Take advantage of your warranty if you can-most are very comprehensive, and will restore your machine to feeling like it is new.

If you are out of your warranty range however, you will need to do what you can to fix it yourself. If it is something as simple as a squeak or sticky, jerking feeling, this can usually be solved with some standard cleaning.

In general, you should clean your machine every two weeks to a month, if you are using it every day. However, with so many different parts, you may be nervous to break something.

First, start by reading your manufacturer's manual. If you are experiencing a sticking or squeaking inside your product, you will need to get to the inside of your motor.

The rails, motor, and wheels will then be exposed, and easier to access. You can use WD40 to grease or oil your parts, but do not overuse.

If you over-grease your machinery, this can cause a different set of problems. It is recommended that you clean and oil your flywheel at least every week, especially if you use your elliptical machine frequently.

Remember, the more thoroughly you care for your machine, the longer the durability will be. Try tightening each of your nuts and bolts, as they can become loose during use.

Apply lubrication to all the joints, and the function will inevitably improve. Once you have cared for the inside parts, you can reassemble the casing and work on the outside of your machine.

Be sure to put the parts back exactly where they were, and secure them safely. If this has solved your problem, you are all done.

However, if your product seems to be having a more serious problem such as a motor that will not work, a computer malfunction, or a display problem, you may need to send away for a replacement part. Buy your parts from a quality manufacturer of ellipticals.

Know the four major parts of your equipment, which are the foot pedals, hand bars, magnetic resistance, and the axis. You will have an easier time explaining what part you need to purchase if you have an understanding of the makeup of your piece.

Remember, ordering parts can take weeks. Have patience, and make sure their arrival is guaranteed. The last thing you need is to finally receive a replacement piece which has been broken or damaged in the mail.

As you can see, fixing your elliptical doesn't have to be expensive or complicated. Just do your research, and try all the options you can on your own before hiring an expensive repairman.
