Hypnosis is without a doubt the most popular method of self improvement around. Every year millions of people use it to lose weight, quit smoking, beat addictions, develop confidence and much more. Despite this most people still know very little about hypnosis, what it is and how it works.

What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration which allows suggestions to be made to the subconscious mind. Contrary to the belief of many a person who is under hypnosis is fully aware of what is going on, they are neither unconscious or asleep. It feels deeply relaxing and people usually awaken from their hypnotic trance feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis works by bypassing the conscious mind and speaking directly to the subconscious. If you consciously say to yourself "I don't want to smoke" then that won't work, in fact it may make your cravings worse. However because the subconscious houses habits and instinctive actions if you convince that part of the mind you no longer wish to smoke it is highly likely that you will be able to successfully give up smoking.

A typical hypnosis session comprises of five sections. To begin with the hypnotherapist builds rapport with the client. Then the hypnotherapist induces a hypnotic state and this is then deepened further. Next comes the hypnotic suggestions where the hypnotherapist helps the client to achieve whatever their goal may be. Finally the client is brought out of their hypnotic trance.

Are There Any Dangers?

The only known danger of hypnosis is that because of its relaxing nature it is not a good idea to drive or operate heavy machinery while listening to hypnotherapy via CDs or MP3s. Other than that hypnosis is completely safe. It is not possible to make someone do something they don't want to do or reveal any secrets they don't want to under hypnosis since a hypnotized person is still fully aware of what they are doing. Similarly it isn't possible to get "stuck" in hypnosis as is depicted in the movie Office Space. If something were to happen to the hypnotherapist or you hear something that you must attend to you will naturally rise from your hypnotic state and be able to function as you normally would.

Who Can Be Hypnotized?

People who are able to go into the deepest hypnotic trances tend to be intelligent, visually creative individuals. Susceptibility studies have shown that 80% of the population have a medium hypnotic susceptibility, while 10% are low and 10% are high. That means 90% of the population can be hypnotized and even the 10% who struggle can be hypnotized, it just takes more effort.

I hope this articles has answered any question you may have about hypnosis. The best answer any hypnosis question though is to try it yourself. There are many great hypnotherapists who run websites that offer hypnosis sessions on CD or MP3 at low prices, or in some cases completely free. Once you use hypnosis you will realise what a fantastic complementary treatment it is.
