When you are working out on an elliptical it is very easy to get bored. It may feel like there are not a lot ways to mix up your workout when you are on a machine that only allows your legs to move in one motion.

Taking the time to find out what you should be doing differently on a machine may seem pointless. There are a lot of alterations you can make when you are on the machine that will help you work new muscles.

First, you can start by pushing the steps backwards instead of pushing them forwards. When you push them backwards you will be working a whole new set of muscles than when you are pushing them forward.

As you start to do this, you will want to make sure that you have a good balanced footing on the pedals. It is much easier for people to fall of the machine when they are not using it in the traditional way.

Adjusting the resistance on the machine when you are pedaling backwards is not going to help your cause very much. Because the resistance on the machine is designed for pedaling forwards you will not be able to feel the change in resistance.

Some of the newer machines are being made so that they can be used in a forward motion and a backwards motion. If you have one of these machines you can start going backwards while adjusting the resistance.

The more resistance that you have, the better workout you will be giving your muscles. Although it may be hard at first, you can set small goals for yourself so that you are able to work to a larger goal.

Another way to change your workout is to utilize the handlebars. When you are on the machine you will mostly be working your legs.

As you start to pump your arms you will notice that your arms may get sore quicker and that you may feel a burn in your arms as well as your legs. This means that you are going to be able to workout your legs and your arms simultaneously.

The more that you use your arms the more muscle you are going to gain and the easier it will become. If you have not used the handlebars before because you have feared you will be taking away from your legs, give them a try.

If you start to feel that your legs are not being worked as much as they used to, all you have to do is turn up the intensity. This way your arms and your legs will still be receiving a workout that will make changes.

There are not a lot of people that use the handlebars because they think that they are unnatural or uncomfortable. Although it may not feel natural at first you will warm up to the idea as your muscles create muscle memory.

When you find that you are getting bored with your workout you may want to try utilizing the different options on the machine. Often times there will be options that will give you the ability to simulate going through a course.

The machine will automatically change intensity, resistance and incline when you are coming up on a new area of the course. If there is a screen on the elliptical you will be able to watch yourself make progress through the course.

Some machines do not have this capability, but just because they do not have the capability you can simulate a course of your own. Writing out a course before hand will help you to remember when to change the different settings.

As you are changing the settings make sure that you keep your mind's eye on the ultimate goal. Having one large goal that you can work for will help you to push through the moments that feel utterly impossible.

The harder that you are working out each day the easier the workout will become. You have to develop a habit to make sure that the workouts are consistent and effective.

When you are working out sporadically you cannot expect to accomplish your goals very quickly. Viewing the time that you put into your physical health as an investment will help you to understand the pay off in the long run.

No matter how you keep your body moving to stay healthy, make sure that you are safe and that you workout to make yourself more healthy.
