Why is it that when a group of people are exposed to the same pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, that only some get sick and others don't? Are those germs selectively targeting the unlucky souls who appear to them to be the most tasty? The fact is that the single factor that determines whether illness follows from exposure to most pathogens in the environment is the individual immune system, or the body's ability to successfully "seek and destroy" those germs before they can reproduce enough to cause the symptoms and consequences of physical illness.

We all know some people who are "sickly" and others who never seem to succumb to even seasonal colds when most around them are sniffing and sneezing. It isn't a matter of luck. The difference between these people is that the forever-healthy ones have strong immune systems, whose bodies have all of the weapons they need to fight infection and the building materials to heal themselves. These weapons and materials come from nutrition.

One of the building blocks of the immune system is glutathione, an antioxidant that is essential for a fully functional immune system. It is produced by the body's cells, and acts, in part, by neutralizing damaging free radicals and detoxifying both organic and inorganic foreign invaders, including carcinogens. Glutathione essentially controls the immune response, playing numerous roles on the cellular level affecting every system in the body. Studies show that immunocompromised individuals have critically low levels of glutathione.

It would seem that if one is lacking in this substance, that there should be a pill for that. Unfortunately, taking glutathione orally does not raise the cellular level of the substance. However, it has been well documented by many studies that by taking the cysteine precursors of glutathione, or those essential components of the substance that the body needs to create it, that glutathione levels are increased within the cells. One source rich in cysteine is whey protein that is processed from denatured cow's milk.

The benefits of taking supplements proven to building glutathione levels are many. In addition to building a stronger immune system that aids the body in fighting disease, it helps to repair an immune system weakened by stress, pollution, inadequate diet, or illness. It also slows the aging process by fighting the free radicals that damage organ and skin cells, causing deterioration of elastin and collagen that keeps skin supple and youthful. In short, taking cysteine supplements help you live a longer, healthier life and look younger for longer while you enjoy it. Sounds pretty worthwhile, doesn't it?
