Anesthesia is typically used to help any patient not to feel pain during a patient procedure. There are several times at which one might find themselves requiring anesthesia. Those who are unaware of what anesthesia is or why they might have to use it may find themselves panicking when they end up needing to use it at one point or another throughout their lifetime. It's therefore important to know what anesthesia is and why one might use it so one can be prepared when and if the time comes.

Anesthesia is a drug that is used to help someone to lose feeling or awareness. This can be done while someone is either conscious or unconscious. Usually, it depends upon the patients' preferences as well as the procedure at hand. There are many instances in which someone might necessitate using this drug. Usually, a patient will be able to decide if he or she wants to take it. Typically, patients will opt to take it as it usually eliminates any chance of the patient feeling pain during a procedure.

One common procedure that typically necessitates anesthesia is that of tonsil removal. Usually, tonsils are removed when they become so large that they make it difficult for one to breath, swallow or both. Typically, tonsil removal is a last case scenario after antibiotics have been tried. Tonsil removal is generally known as tonsillectomy and is not always required for every person. Also, since there are different types of anesthesia, it will depend upon the type of patient to know what type of anesthesia will be used.

Another type of common procedure that usually uses anesthesia would be child birth. Of course, this only applies to women. Since the act of childbirth can be incredibly painful, many women opt for anesthetics, generally speaking. This allows women to be awake during childbirth but to completely minimize the pain they would otherwise be feeling.

Surgeries are yet another event in which one would be given the choice to use anesthesia. Any type of surgical procedure might qualify. This would be anything from hip removal surgery to cosmetic surgery. Because anesthesia is such a sensitive procedure, it is always administered by a nurse anesthetist who is highly skilled and trained to handle anything that might go amiss during the operation. Indeed, there are several reasons one might want the services of an anesthesiologist. It's important to be aware of them so that one can make an informed decision when and if the time ever comes to use it.
