You may be sitting in your home looking out the window at the cold snow that is falling down. You sigh and really wished it was summer so you could go cycling!

But you do the next best thing: ride an indoor exercise bike. It is an easy alternative to get your fix of biking during the winter months.

But at some time or another, summer will come back and you will be able to ride the open roads again. For people that live in rural areas with lots of natural trails, it is an easy jump.

For those who live in cities or metropolitan areas, it might be a little easier said than done. Cities present an interesting challenge to cycle riders because of the congestions and the traffic that they have to face.

But don't let those thoughts stop you from getting out on the open road! You are perfectly capable of riding your bike in a city area safely.

Keep in mind, though, that it is not exactly the same as riding out in nature. There are different ways of doing it properly.

So what exactly are some of the things that you need to keep in mind when you're riding amongst city-dwellers. Here is a simple list of things that you need to remember to do at all times.

First and foremost, you should always wear a helmet when you ride in the city. Actually, you should always wear a helmet no matter what environment you are in!

But it is especially true in metropolitan areas. There are so many things that could be dangerous to you.

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and pedestrians are just a few of the things that can get in your way and cause problems; and if they are not paying attention, they can easily strike you and take you down.

Wearing a helmet is imperative because it will at least keep you alive if any unfortunate accident would happen; and in the city, an unfortunate accident is more likely to befall you.

The next thing to remember to do is always use a bike lane. Most modern cities have paved the road in such a way that there can be room for cyclers and cars at the same time.

If there is a bike lane in your city, you always need to use it. Your town has given you the safety and right to own that area and you need to appreciate it by using it.

If you use that lane, it can also help traffic flow smoother. That way, cars will not have to slow down to accommodate riders that are on the road.

If there is no lane, it might be necessary that you will have to get in the way of cars a little bit. But that doesn't mean you have to hog the road and cause problems!

If it is the only option, always stay on the side of the road and get as close to the curb as possible. That way, a car or truck will have less of a chance of hitting you with its side or mirror.

You also need to be aware of parked cars if you are in this scenario. A person could open their parked car door without you knowing and you could easily smash into their door and seriously injure yourself.

If you are up to it and feel like you can ride in the actual lane of traffic, then you need to be aware of the rules that you need to follow. This means using proper hand signals to signify if you are turning left or right.

To signify that you are turning left, you stick your arm out to the left before and while you are making the turn. If you want to show that you are turning right, make a right angle with your left arm and stick your hand straight up in the air.

If you want to show other vehicles that you are stopping, there is also a way to do that. You do this by mimicking the right turn signal, but instead of your hand facing, it will be facing down.
