It's hard to get away from stress these days: 24-hour news channels constantly remind us that the world is a dangerous, insecure place and that the American economy is in serious trouble. Joblessness is way up with no immediate end in sight, crime is on the rise, and many of us are suffering from some real financial troubles. If you want to find more natural ways to cope with stress instead of relying on costly prescription remedies, here are a few tips.

--A good place to start is with your family doctor. Undue amounts of stress and fatigue may be related to something physical rather than emotional, or a combination of both. Get a complete physical checkup from a qualified professional to put your mind at ease: he will also be a great resource for advice and information on non-medical remedies.

--Watch what you eat: If you are a fast food fanatic, it's time to mend your ways! Healthy, raw foods help reduce stress levels and clear your mind. Make sure you eat breakfast each and every day instead of relying on coffee for an artificial pick-me-up. Some of the best specific foods for stress relief are: avocados, oatmeal, salmon, oranges and skim milk.

--Regular exercise: You want to get at least 30 minutes a day of vigorous, heart-pounding movement. It can be a walk, jog, swim or a workout on a cardio machine at the gym. Just make sure you are getting your heart rate up over a sustained period of time. This type of exercise releases serotonins -- those "feel good" hormones that the body produces naturally.

--Get some sunshine: Being cooped up in an office under artificial lighting all day greatly increases stress levels. Taking in some real, honest to goodness sunshine 10 minutes a day helps your body to produce vitamin D and will also elevate your mood. Remember, however, that when it comes to exposure to sun there really can be too much of a good thing: if you're going to be out longer than 10 minutes, wear plenty of sun block.

--Take supplements geared toward stress-relief. Your local or online pharmacy is a great resource for different types of supplements that can really make a big difference. If your body is overstressed, one of the first places affected are your adrenal glands. Taking an adrenal supplement will help your body deal with stress better and keep it functioning properly.

--Turn off the news. Treat yourself to a "news free" week on a regular basis. If anything that happens is truly important, you'll hear about it from other sources. But your stress levels simply don't need a constant bombardment of bad news!
