If you have always had a normally-functioning memory--both short and long term--then an unexpected decrease in your ability to recall facts and general information can be tremendously alarming.

Unfortunately, because of the high occurrence of Alzheimer's disease in our country, many people, particularly those that are aging, jump to the frightening conclusion that this type of dementia may be setting in. But the truth is that there are several health conditions that could be the culprit behind your sudden dip in memory function.

Believe it or not, depression can wreak havoc on your entire body, including your brain! Almost everyone knows that depression generally causes ongoing feels of sadness or hopelessness, but it also manifests itself through loss of interest and trouble concentrating.

If you just can't concentrate on what's going on, you are unlikely to remember later on. So, if you are having trouble focusing on tasks that you used to find simple, along with other serious symptoms, such as persistent sadness or thoughts of suicide, call your doctor right away. Together, you can formulate a treatment plan that is right for you.

Are you suffering from insomnia or do you fail to make enough time for sleep every night? Research has proven that lack of sleep has the same effect on the brain as drinking too much alcohol. Just like partying too hard can damage your memories of that night, sleep loss can make your mind completely fuzzy.

If insomnia is the culprit, try to get to the root cause. If it can be dealt with by small adjustments, then make them! If not, consult your physician to talk about a prescription sleep aid.

But if you are just not giving yourself enough time to sleep, then you need to make the changes necessary for you to get at least eight hours of rest. It's easier said than done, I know, but your memory is suffering--that is your body's alarm that all is not right in your body!

How high is your stress level? We all have to deal with stress in its various forms, but when we have no outlet for it (or don't seek one), our minds are put on overload and have trouble processing new information.

Find a way to let go of stressful feelings. I highly recommend getting active and breaking a sweat. This also serves to increase blood flow to the brain, boosting your memory and other vital brain functions.

Finally, pay attention to any other symptoms that are manifesting themselves. Are you becoming confused? Do you have serious memory loss, such as forgetting where you are? It is definitely time to have a chat with your doctor.
