It's summer camp time! Time to pack up the bug spray, the sunscreen and the water gear. This year, pack an ounce or two of prevention too, and help your child become an expert at preventing head lice at camp.

1. Talk to your child about preventing lice at camp

Make sure your child knows how lice are spread. Teach him to avoid close head-to-head contact with other campers, and to avoid sharing towels, caps and pillows.

2. Preventing lice through normal hygiene routines

While taking a shower may not be high on your camper's list of fun things to do, be sure he understands how important it is. Make it easy for him prevent head lice, by packing a prevention shampoo and conditioner. Your child will be preventing head lice without doing anything different from his normal routine.

3. Preventing lice with a natural hair tonic

In between showers, your camper can stay lice-free by using a natural hair tonic. Just spray it on, massage it in, and forget it. The all-natural ingredients will work overtime at preventing head lice, and your kid will love the way it looks and feels in his hair. No chemical smells or messy creams needed!

4. Use a lice preventing bunk and fabric spray

Purchase, and show your child how to use, a good lice prevention fabric spray. This can be used on his bunk, pillows, towels and hats. Have him spray his bunk the first day, and every couple of days during his stay. Don't forget to spray bike helmets and ball caps.

5. Check for lice after your child returns from camp

If you forget to pack the lice prevention products, or if your child neglects to use them, be sure to check for any nits (eggs) when your camper returns home. Look closely at the hair strand where it meets the scalp, and watch for any small, white oval nits. If you do find them, don't panic. There are natural and easy to use treatments available.

With a little planning and an ounce or two of preventing products, you won't have to worry about head lice at camp this summer.
