If you're like most parents, you wouldn't dream of sending your child off to camp without the proper equipment to keep him safe and healthy. You dutifully pack the sunscreen, and make sure he knows how and when to apply it. And you put in an extra bottle of bug spray too, to keep those mosquito bites at bay. So, what about head lice? How are you preventing lice at summer camp?

This idea comes as a surprise to a lot of parents, but most camp directors can tell you this little secret. Lice are a big potential problem at summer camps. Even the most well-run camps can't always prevent a camper with lice from bunking with your child. It's up to you to pack the lice prevention, and make sure your little camper knows how to use it.

Safe and Natural Ways of Preventing Head Lice at Summer Camp

Nobody wants to douse their kid with extra chemicals and pesticides. They'll get enough of that from the bug spray and everything else in their environment. Fortunately, some excellent products are available that are all natural, safe and non-toxic. Best of all, they do a great job of preventing head lice, at summer camp and year-round.

The first product on your list should be an all-natural fabric and bunk spray. Make sure your child understands how to use this. Ideally, he should spray his entire bunk, including mattress, bedding and sleeping bag, when he first sets up his bed. Have him repeat this a few times during his stay, at least every couple of days. If you choose a natural-based product, there will be no harsh smells or nasty odors, only a clean, fresh scent.

Lice Preventing Hair Care Products for Summer Camp

The next items to pack are organic preventing shampoo and conditioner. Simply pack these instead of your child's normal hair products. They'll enjoy the fresh, clean scent and it will fit right into their normal routine.
Let's face it; kids will sometimes go a little longer than they should without showering, especially if they are doing a lot of swimming and water sports. In between shampoos, a spray-on hair tonic can be a lifesaver in terms of preventing lice at camp. Simply have your child spray it according to the package directions.

These simple tips will go a long way toward preventing head lice at summer camp. Happy summer!
