Ah, summer camp....full of happy times on the lake, songs around the campfire, and cool arts and crafts. You think everything is going along fine, and your kid is having a great time. Then, you get a phone call. You are asked to pick up your child early and bring him home, because he has head lice.

Head lice?!? You know your child was lice-free when you packed him up to go. And your child is generally clean, with good hygiene, as far as kids go. During the school year, you were careful to talk to your child about preventing lice, and how to avoid an infestation. How could this happen?

You won't find it on the camp's website, and you'll probably never see it in their brochure. But be certain that camp directors know all about this problem. It's head lice, and you need to understand how you can prevent it if you are sending your child to summer camp.

Lice are a fact of life anytime you have large groups of kids in close quarters, and it has nothing to do with how well-run the camp might be. In the midst of all the swimming, crafts and games, your child might be exposed to lice and not even know it.

Preventing Head Lice at Summer Camp

Head lice thrive in the warm, close conditions of a summer tent or cabin. Sharing towels, swapping bike helmets, or snuggling on pillows for late night horror stories can all lead to a lice infestation. Be sure your kids understand these simple tips:

* Before sending your kids off, be sure to let them know that it's important not to share combs, brushes, towels and hats.

* Encourage them to keep up on their usual shower or bath routines.

* Use a lice prevention fabric spray on summer camp items like baseball caps, helmets and pillows.

Lice prevention shampoos, conditioners and fabric sprays will keep those buggers at bay. Your child will enjoy the mild, safe products, and you'll rest easier knowing there are no little "stowaways" coming home from camp this year. Okay, so it won't show up on most lists of "what to pack for camp." But if you really knew how common it is to contract head lice at summer camp, it would definitely be on yours!
