Bars, police departments and schools all have different reasons to use a breathalyzer. Many of these locations use the device to deter individuals from drinking and driving. Schools use this device in order to ensure no students have been drinking on their property. While there are many different reasons to use an alcohol breathalyzer, there are also many different models.

There are disposable units that can be purchased at just a few dollars each. These disposable testers allow drinkers to see when they have had enough and should not be driving. A positive test result also deters individuals from drinking and driving. Many urban legends exist that state breath tests can be beat. It is nearly impossible to beat any breath testing device. Even with disposable tests, results are more than 90% accurate. Schools use these types of testing equipment for proms, dances as well as cases where they believe a student may have been drinking. Bars can have these available to patrons to determine which ones should not be driving.

Police departments and serious screeners are more likely to use an electronic version of the breath testing device. These machines have personal mouthpieces that are blown into to determine an individual's blood alcohol content. Unlike the disposable version of the product, police departments typically use their devices to deal with a problem that has already occurred. Drivers who are believed to be under the influence of alcohol are required by law to take a test. Refusing to take a breath test from an officer is a felony charge punishable by jail sentences or prison. Drivers who do not consent to a one may have a blood test performed. This type of testing can be compelled by a court order when the officer states that an individual is unwilling to have their breath tested.

Many alcohol breathalyzer tests are conducted after there has been a concern. Using a portable breath test unit before driving can clear up any possibility of drinking and driving. Police-grade breath testing equipment can be expensive to purchase, but handheld fuel-cell units are becoming more affordable every day. A disposable test is much less expensive and can save an individual from thousands of dollars in fines, fees and court costs. Breathalyzers that are used to deter individuals from drinking and driving also save lives. Drinking can lower an individual's inhibitions as well as their judgment standards. This makes a breath test one of the most reliable methods of keeping dangerous drivers off the road.
